View Full Version : 56G786 and VGA inputs = crap?

I have 56" JVC LCOS set that I purchased back in March for, probably, too much money.

I've been pretty happy with the set, but my Xbox360 (component) gives a minor ghosting effect around the lettering that I've always found annoying. I tried both component inputs, and they both did it. So, I figured I'd try out the 360 VGA cables.

The VGA display on this set was horrible. The highest rez it would do is 1024x768, and even then the image was in the middle of the screen with black borders on all sides. The quality was horrible -- about on par with a CRT TV using RCA jacks. Really, really bad.

The 360 lets you output in many VGA resolutions, but only 1024x768 and 640x480 worked. The others would cause weird screen distortions, like the screen dimming, the image stretching above and below the screen, etc. And while 1024x768 and 640x480 worked, they looked horrid.

Is there something wrong my set, or does it just plain suck at doing VGA output?

I'd kill for an Xbox360 with HDMI outputs. :(

Edit - I hooked up my laptop to the TV and got the exact same results, so it's not the 360.

Although part of the issue may be with the sending device, have a look at the HDTV FAQ "What you need to do to your new HDTV". Turn down sharpness and turn off any "edge enhancement" cicuitry and "auto settings" available in the user menu.

I think your TV is not good at VGA. Stick with component./ I'd also try turning down the sharpness or shut off any edge enhancement modes.
