I have a problem with charter's HDTV channels dropping audio and video. Does anyone else have this problem? Is Dish Network better?

I have had similar problems. I have the SA8300 and when i watch normal TV in 480I mode its fine, when I go to the HD channels it switches to 1080I ( I am hooked up with Auto HDMI in the settings). What happens in HD is my video and audio will drop out for about 3 seconds and the input flashes and it comes back on. Probably does it about 3 times a night, sometimes while switching between HD channels. I have also changed the box due to this issue and it is still happening.

Check your signal strength, also perform regular reboots (unplug/replug) once a month. See the HDTV FAQ "Tips for SA STBs".

It's probably signal strength as 57U suggested. Make sure the box is on one of the earliest splits from the drop coming into the home. (Don't put it before the phone if you have this service)

Make sure any fittings on splitters are wrench tight, believe it or not finger tight connections can lose you 1/2 to a 1 db in strength as well as introduce RF noise into the line. (Don't use a wrench on connections at the box, tv, or wall plate)

If it continues, schedule a "trouble call" with Charter, they shouldn't charge you and will check the signal strength at the box, and bring a replacement if needed.

I called charter. They said maybe the DVR maybe signal strength. She did not know. But she would charge $35 for them to come out and check their own equipment. I said don't bother.

Ask for a supervisor. They should not charge a fee to test/check/replace "their" DVR and/or the quality of the signal, the cables, connectors or grounding to the primary location.

But! If you personally added splitters and other dongles... that's on you.
