View Full Version : Frustrated in Vancouver - HDRI -> DVI

I recently purchased a Samsung HT-TQ85 Home Theatre system to work with my 42" Sony Projection LCD TV (KF-42WE620). The unit has HDMI out and my TV has DVI in (with the manual stating that it "can accommodate a copy-protected digital connection (HDCP) to other devices such as digital TV receivers that have compatible interfaces, compliant with the EIA-861 standard.")

So, I purchased an HDMI -> DVI cable (DVI-D, single link) and when connected, I get no picture (actually, intermittent flashes of blue and green). Component video works fine, but I was hoping to enjoy the benefits of the upconverting DVD. Here's the troubleshooting steps I have taken:

1. Tested the cable, works fine.
2. Connected an HD video cam (using the HDMI -> DVI cable) to the TV and it worked fine.
3. Tested the new Samsung unit with another TV (HDMI -> HDMI) and it worked fine.

Coincidentally, when I attach my Motorola PVR (DCT6412) to the TV, again using the HDRI -> DVI cable, I get no picture as well.

Sony has been little help, sending a technician to my house to basically tell me what I already knew, and the vendor that I purchased the new system from is not technically strong.

The TV is less than 18 months old, and otherwise works perfectly. The whole thing has me frustrated :sightv: in Vancouver. Any help, comments, or tips would be muchly appreciated. Thanks!

Try plugging and unplugging the cable a few times. Perhaps you have a poor electrical/mechanical connection on the HDCP portion (the video cam probably doesn't require HDCP, while the STB would. )

See the HDTV FAQ "Things to check first" most of which you've already done.

Thanks 57U. I tried that as well but to no avail. For a moment, when I connected the Motorola PVR directly to the TV, I got a picture, then a message on the screen saying "The HD Content Protection of your display has been compromised. Please use the YPbPr outlets for your HD content", then the picture disappeared again.

Could that be a clue as to the problem when connecting the HTIB??

Also, is there any advantage to connecting the PVR thru HDMI as opposed to component?

Also, is there any advantage to connecting the PVR thru HDMI as opposed to component? Not significant. See the HDTV FAQ "DVI/HDMI Information" points 2, 3.
