I just bought a Toshiba 720p Hd Moniter and an LG DVD player with HD Upcoversion. I have them connected with an HDMI cable.

Every now and then during playback the movie image will pause for a split second then jump and continue. Does this occur because of the conversion process of framerates or what?

I'm not sure about the conversion process of framerates, but has this been happening on a few DVD's or just one DVD? If it's just the one DVD, it could be that the DVD is dirty. If it's happening on all DVD's you play, then it might be something to do with your above question about the conversion process of framerates.

It happened a couple times with Fellowship of the Ring and once so far with Two Towers. I know my old DVD player did this when it switched from layers of the disc. Maybe that was it but usually it is coupled with a slight pause in the sound.

Hmmm, this reminds me, to HD Upconverters do something with sound at all? Me and most of my friends agree that the sound is much more clear than it used to be. I wouldn't think so but I trust my judgement, I am a sound engineering major.

Upconverting players do nothing to the sound. I assume you're connected via a digital audio connection (optical or coaxial), using bitsteam, in which case there should really be no audible difference, unless your original player was really bad.

i guess my old dvd player was really bad because i'm noticing more and more things in videos i was very familiar with.
