Hey, I'm new here and have a question about my Samsung hcn4727w rear projection HDTV. I was wondering why the tv wont accept a 720p signal over component video cables from my xbox 360 (and other hdtv sources like hd cable box). It will accept 1080i and 480p no problem, but not 720p. Also, the tv supposedly supports 720p over the DVI interface on the back but I have connected an upconverting dvd player to the DVI interface via an HDMI cable and then I use an HDMI to DVI converter to connect the dvd player to my tv. (the tv doesn't have any HDMI interfaces.) To my surprise, the tv wont accept a 720p signal over a digital connection either, even though on the back of the tv it clearly says 720p just below the interface. I am stuck now, because at first I thought that it was just the fact that the tv won't accept 720p over an analog connection but the fact that it won't accept 720p over a digital connection puzzles me. (Not sure if it could be because I used the HDMI to DVI converter, but I'm assuming that wouldn't be the problem since they are both digital cables.) Does anybody know a solution to this problem? Thanks in advance. :thankyou3

Here's a previous thread:

It will accept 720p over DVI only from what I can see...

Try unplugging both the TV and external device. Power up the TV first, then the external device.

Hey, I am aware that the tv will not accept 720p over component (which i find to be silly) and now I am trying to find the problem relating to the DVI interface which is said to be capable of supporting 720p. When I connect my up converting Pioneer DVD player to it through an HDMI cable with a DVI converter to plug into the dvi input I set the dvd players resolution to 720p and the tv won't get the signal. I called up Samsung and they could not give me a clear answer as to the problem and the Pioneer Canada website was having issues loading. As far as this goes, I am only left to believe that the dvi converter device will not let me get 720p video or there is something wrong with the tv itself (which is unlikely because it works fine for all other resolutions).

Hey, you can try a different converter. I'd be reluctant to say that was your problem since it works with other resolutions. ;)

I was doing some more research regarding this hdtv and found out that it has cinema progressive scan. I also got this quote:
"Samsung's Cinema Progressive Scan automatically upconverts all nondigital signals to a smooth, clear 720 lines of progressively scanned images."
Honestly, this is really confusing me now because I know that component cables are considered analogue so does this mean that when I input a 1080i signal through component the tv is actually showing it as a 720p image?
Your TV is a CRT-based RPTV and as such all HD signals are converted to 1080i.
Here's a link with that same quote: (I found other similar quotes, which I also believe are incorrect)
http://www.mediacollege.com/equipment/samsung/tv/hc/hcn4727w.html
The following site discusses 1080i, which all CRTs use.

I believe that somehow that 720P remark has made it into a lot of sites (incorrectly). Unless what they are refering to is an "intermediate step" of conversion before final display at 1080i.
In my experience there have been no consumer CRTs with 720P native displays in about 5 years.

Thanks alot for all of the sites and tips you guys have given me, they have really helped out alot. So far, I think that I have fixed up everything after alot of tweaking. I went into the menu for the dvd player and tweaked the settings so that now the dvd player outputs 720p (the dvd player now shows this on the display.) The tv will now ACCEPT the signal (finally) over the dvi interface. This makes me extremely pleased
As far as 720p over component goes, I don't know why they excluded 720p support over that connection however I can tell you now that it doesn't worry me a bit because my Xbox 360 looks stunning when set to 1080i output. Also, the hd cable box does a fair job when I am tuned into hd sports channels and such. Thanks alot for all the help again, my problem is fixed
