View Full Version : PS3, Switcher, A/V Problem

I just got ONKYO TX-SR674 A/V receiver. This receiver has two HDMI inputs. Just to let you know the PS3 won’t run when running through the HDMI HDX-501 switcher to the receiver then to the TV but it will work directly through the receiver. I don’t know the technical reason why this is happening but if you’re like me and want to run three or more HDMI devices I would suggest getting a receiver that has an HDMI input for each device unless you know for sure it will handle your devices through a switcher. Or if someone with knowhow has better advice take that.

I assume you meant get a TV that has an input for each device - may sometimes be difficult.

The issue with some HDMI switching receivers is well known - there is often a firmware incompatibility between the "sending device" and the AVR.

It may be possible to get a stand-alone HDMI switch, which will work from a place like Monoprice.com, since the switches don't have firmware.

Yikes, I don’t think I explained that very well then.
“I assume you meant get a TV that has an input for each device - may sometimes be difficult.”
No, I’m not saying get a TV with a bunch of HDMI inputs.

“The issue with some HDMI switching receivers is well known - there is often a firmware incompatibility between the "sending device" and the AVR.”
I was not aware of this however as I said the PS3 will work from the switcher to the TV it just won’t work from the switcher to the A/V receiver to the TV. I should have mentioned that my HDDVD player and cable box do work from the switcher to the A/V receiver to the TV, just not the PS3.

“It may be possible to get a stand-alone HDMI switch, which will work from a place like Monoprice.com, since the switches don't have firmware.”
Oh boy, please read the post. I said I’m running through the HDMI HDX-501 switcher, which I happened to buy from Mononprice.

Whoops, Sorry about the misread. Thanks for the clarification (reiteration) for these weak old eyes. Sometimes I read too fast and miss an item (like the switcher) ;)

I guess going through two devices is causing the issues - perhaps a loss of signal with too much switching/length? Are you getting an HDCP error message, or simply no signal? How long are the HDMI cables? - if less than 6' each, there shouldn't be an issue really, but if you've got 6' + switch + 6' + AVR + 6' and if the HDMI cables are the "inexpensive" ones from monoprice, perhaps a thicker gauge would help?

PS, you're lucky your STB works with your AVR. Quite a few don't.

DVD players usually aren't an issue.

No problem.
“I guess going through two devices is causing the issues…”
Maybe but why don’t I have the same problem when running my Toshiba HD-A1 and my Comcast cable box Motorola DCT6412 from the switcher to the receiver to the TV like I do with the PS3?
“…perhaps a loss of signal with too much switching/length?”
These are the cables I’m running on all devices; http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10240&cs_id=1024002&p_id=2219&seq=1&format=2&style=

Glad I got lucky there.

Those cables look fine.

If you haven't already, try a different input on the switch for the PS3. I have heard of switches with faulty inputs.

Perhaps the PS3 doesn't output as strong a signal as the other 2?

Well I tried different inputs and still nothing. It’s just weird; the receiver appears to be picking up the signal I just get a blank screen.

“Perhaps the PS3 doesn't output as strong a signal as the other 2?”

Interesting, can this be measured? If so how?

Sounds to me like it isn't going to work at all. I'd try another switcher or take it direct to the tv.

I have an Onkyo TX-SR 604, and I currently use the monoprice HDS-201... I have connected my DISH Satelite and Samsung HD-806 upconverting DVD player...connected into one HDMI #1 input slot on the reciever... (PS3 soley into the #2 HDMI slot).

I have 3ft HDMI cables connecting into the switcher and from the switcher to reciever....I have absolutely no problems.

(NOTE: I just went and connected my PS3 through the switcher...Everything is working!)

As your reciever is the upgraded model, I do not see why yours would not work the same...maybe the HDX-501 has a defect? Try the HDS-201...http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=101&cp_id=10110&cs_id=1011001&p_id=2786&seq=1&format=2&style=

also, I use these super cheap HDMI cables...no problems...Fully HDCP compliant

YES!!! Success!!! Well I found the solution. Of all places to find it I stumbled across a short review of the HDX-501 switcher on Amazon.com “1 of 1 people found the following review helpful:
Good Product with Poor Documentation, January 11, 2007
Reviewer: John G. Fields "DeLandGator" (DeLand, FL USA) - See all my reviews

I bought this switch so that I could specifically connect my cable box, dvd and PS3 to my Sony television that only has one HDMI input. I was on the verge of returning it when I saw the review below that said that the PS3 will only work on Port 5. Had I not seen that I would have returned it.

The performance of the unit plus the cost definitely puts it on a 5-star level but the lack of meaningful instructions I dropped it to a 4-star.”

I couldn’t believe it when I hooked the PS3 up to the Port no. 5 switch and it worked. Why this is the way it is I don’t know but I’m happy now. Thanks for all your help.

I can't believe I didn't try port 5. DOH!
