Is Time Warner Cable going to offer the Discovery HD Theatre channel?

Sincerely,

The Newts

i've been bugging them about it lately

sent a few request on their page - called a few times. but i get the impression that they [customer service] don't really know much about it all.

cause for all the calling i've done everytime i get a different story or a different answer or someone who doesn't even know what the concept of a hdtv is.

Time Warner Cable is in talks with DiscoveryHD but I think its going to take a while, at least in the Los Angeles area. I'm sure Discovery will charge heftily for its HD programming - as will ESPN HD. ESPN knows HD nuts will drool over their programming . . . I hope people don't get too anxious about the HD versions of premium channels - the last thing we want is to see a higher cost HD tier of service.

Let's hope that doesn't happen. Anyone know about the WB station? I've heard they might start broadcasting soon...

If you are talking about WB OTA in LA, it is already up and running. They are upconverting most programming to 1080i, but a couple of their shows are now being shot/shown in HD, (Reba, What I Like About You).

I called Time Warner in Houston, Tx where I live to ask them about ESPN HD and they told me that they would be launching Discovery HD in early April (next month). So be on the look out in your area for this.

I spoke with a TW-New York Rep on Friday. She said that they have not been notified by management if or when ESPN-HD will be available.

Though, she did say they probable would not find out if it was going to be available until the week of release.

Your cable company I think is actually required to give a 30 day notice on change of service. I have Time Warner in Medina, OH. and I have never received a notification.

Speaking of TWCNEO, they are absolutely horrible.

Well? Any News?
Houston is my favorite city, right after San Diego since I have family in both.
It is a more technological town what with the Space Center and the 4th largest in the country. TWC had 9 HD channels when no one had any or hardly any...so what do have now for HD on TWC?
The Same? Like to know...and while were are at it, do you have DVRs like we in do in Kenosha?

The TWC Houston website is the same it was a year ago unless nothing else has changed....

There has been no change. We still do not have the channels. We still only have the 9 channels. They are working on ESPN HD but there is not definite date. Also, we do not have DVR's yet here.

Wisconsin is so backward they didn't even know what this meant...they thought I meant the "Nassau"channel.
Yet they claim to be so "centered" on educational channels...yeah, right.
I WILL miss DIRECTV when I move soon and have to get TWC as my only link to the HD/SD world.
Maybe I can watch the NASA channel on RoadRunner on my small computer screen. That's what I call progress.....

YOU Texas guys have this channel.

Why not "lovely" Wisconsin?

The DVRs, however, are great. A little time to get used to and then you are off recording things you never thought you would watch...yet something is always available for you on YOUR timeframe. Record 2 at once and watch the 3rd recorded and even have a picture in picture swapout.

Hope you get these SD-only DVR's....by the time you do, the HD ones will come, probably. Model SA8000 is the SD, SA8000HD for recording HD with probably a firewire-capable HDTV. :D

I just call and call the TWC offices here in lovely Wisconsin and no one knows a blasted thing about a new HD package like DIRECTV is getting out in July.
I get members on the Milwaukee HD forum writing in messages saying so and so told them this and that...but now I am on the "warpath" so to speak and asking for dates, times and names.

Does TWC ever train its employees?

:(
Does anyone get the idea why satellite numbers are increasing?

I don't think it's a matter of training. Actually, maybe it is. They train them to be vague, non-committal, and sometimes even to lie. :)

To be somewhat fair, though I don't accept the excuse, the current situation is in a state of flux and, in some cases, they might not even know themselves what is going on. Corporations being what they are, they don't always get the word down to the lowest level.

The one thing I have noticed here is that the cable co does not yet advertise HD to any great degree. I've yet to see an ad on TV, but the Phoenix part of their website does contain a link to "HD Service". That page then talks about the ESPN-HD that rolled out last month, and shows what stations are available, ABC-HD, PBS-HD, etc. But nowhere does it discuss upcoming offerings, new boxes being tested, or anything remotely like the info we are looking for.

I just saw an ad on TWC in Houston announcing the launch of Discovery HD on Channel 301 starting July 31, 2003. Be on the lookout for this.

I'm in San Diego and have had HD for two weeks now. Discovery HD is shown, as well as KPBS HD, HBO, CBS, NBC and ABC. No Fox or ESPN yet.

Only one downside...can only watch in 4:3 mode in DTV (with the vertical black bars) on any non-HD program or any non-HD channel. Can't use any of the TVs other modes (stretch, zoom, etc.) I normally watch in stretch so I get the 4:3 in the center but the entire screen is used...recommended way to make sure to use all the screen per Mitsubishi's instructions.

I have a Mitsubishi WS-55807 (2 years old)...it's been good so far. By the way, the box is the Sci Atl 3100 which was an upgrade (for free...I already have digitial cable service).

Use one of the other connections (S-video or composite) to watch the SD programmes. You'll then be able to stretch. You'll also probably see a better picture quality because there is a known issue with watching SD programming via the component video cable from the SA3100HD.

See the FAQ on "cables & connections" for more details on this subject. There's even a diagram at the end on how to connect the 3100HD.

Yeah, found that guide (from another TW provider, Time Warner in Kansas City....ironic) and wound up going to Radio Shack and bought a new Audio cable with a piggyback feature to allow the audio signal to be sent to both inputs (the one thing I was missing). Now I can flip over to the other input and watch the normal (non-HD) programming in the mode I want.

In the Minneapolis area it was just announced Time Warner would add Discovery HD to their line up starting tomorrow August 1st! Looking forward to seeing this one and have hopes that ESPNHD won't be far behind. That's the rumor I'm getting from TWC when I bug them about adding more HD options...we'll see.

Houston, TX, San Antonio, Orlando, Maine, Minnesota TWC - even Green Bay WI have something in common: they all have Discovery HD Theater. At least they have this non-local HD channel outside of the usual HBO and Showtime HD offerings.
I was surprised that Green Bay, WI had it instead of maybe ESPN-HD being a football town and all...the 2 million or more Wisconsin residents served by TWC are forgotten here in SE Wisconsin. TWC is just too slow here to do anything!!

Discovery HD Theater has been out since May, 2002 and we probably won't get it until May 2004.

Wisconsin's state motto is "Forward". My guess is that they had to do that as the rest of the state is "Backward"!

Even Dish Network refuses to do the SE Wisconsin (Milwaukee) local stations because they figure we won't miss that feature.
I live in an apartment now, but wait TWC when I'm outta here and able to get back in a house again: you're history and you can scare me all you want with your " rain fade" stories.
All you are good for is HD locals:
Is this all you can bring to the HD-plate??

Then the Packer city should have Discovery HD Theatre, but AFTER the larger, more populus area of Wisconsin. Milwaukee and Kenosha rank 1st and 3rd in population and have large universities and colleges so more HD like Discovery would have been a better choice to have them first. TWC is like a large company that is so big it does not know its butt from its elbow. No one there even can tell me an approximate date on anything.
Its like we are the last holdouts on everything. So we are backward and GOOD FOR YOU-DOUBLE DAZ-you got away from Wisconsin!
That is a good thing.

As far the revenue situation goes for TWC, if they don't get their act together HD-channel-wise, many of those HD box renters will be leaving TWC all together for satellite fare. There is only so much local HD channel programming on and the locals here do not even have the HD equipment to produce anything as all they do is direct their networks' programmes into OTA or TWC cable. But they are not on all the time in HD, more like the satellite offerings of non-local channels.

This translates into less subsciber revenue if the TWC subscribers jump ship to satellite for more and better HD offerings.
Even with more than 3,000 HD boxes rented in SE Wisconsin (their figure), this translates with one subscriber lost which can equal to an average of $1000 or more (average per year) times 3000 boxes equals 3 MILLION revenue dollars lost per year.

Maybe TWC does NOT see the bigger picture, so to speak, by stalling on HD channel additions.

Directv does and it looks like Dish is running to keep up soon, too.

Message to TWC:
Local HD is not the whole ballgame and STOP scaring us with RAIN FADE commercials. IF the weather is so darn bad that you can't watch (HD)TV, maybe its time to run for cover (severe storms)!!!:D The power goes out somewhere in the cable line and you lose cable, too, even if YOU have power to YOUR house! What do you want to call that, TWC?
(I have an unprintable one).

TWC: Where the ---- is my Discovery HD Theatre Channel?
It came out in MAY, 2002-do I have to wait ANOTHER year?

Finally the subscribers in SE Wisconsin are getting Discovery HD Theater. :)

It took LONG ENOUGH!

It becomes available on 8/28. I think we were the last holdouts.

(Maybe there are other TWC locations that are still waiting.)

But now for the HDNET-channel addition...but that is another thread, I'm sure.

Still waiting for Discovery in Austin. I spoke with TWC and they told me that we are getting Discovery this month (September).. But I imagine they might just be telling me that to keep me from running to DirecTV. These are the same people that told me a month ago when I was researching that they already offer ESPNHD. Liars!!!!

I live in LA ( West Valley) and I spoke with a TWC rep yesterday. He told me that starting on sept. 15, TWC will add ESPNHD, DSCHD and INHD!!! I will keep you posted.

P.S. I'm not sure if TWC will ever offer HDNET because I heard that they are part owners or affiliated somehow with the INHD network. Bummer:mad:

In El Paso, TWC is only offering HBO and Showtime HD. Can't get a straight answer out of them as to when they will offer anything else (they don't even offer the local channels that have HD either).

Just got off the phone with the HDTV department for Time Warner Queens and they told me that to their knowledge EPSN-HD, Discovery-HD and Fox Sports-HD are all being added soon. I couldn't get a specific date, but this is the first time I've called and they told me what was coming soon. Also I asked them about the 2 new INHD channels and in typical time warner fashion.... "I don't Know Anything about that." Which is weird since I'm getting the previews and saw the US Open on INHD. As usual they are clueless, but hopefully us TWC Queens folks will be getting Espn, Discovery, Fox Sports, InHD and INHD2 very soon. YAY!!! what else can you ask for?... Besides More Channels?

I spoke with a sales rep from TWC today and he told me that they expect ESPN HD by the end of the year as well as INHD. He seemed more sure about ESPN than the other but that's how it's been with them. They claim that most of the time even they do not know when stuff will be added. I emailed Judy Dunn earlier this week as a follow-up and the usually reliable response has not occured. However, the rep did mention to look for some changes (i.e. additional HD programming) in Nov/Dec. We will see. Of course, if we get it then, then we will be just in time for the playoffs and the college bowls as well as for the start of the NBA and College basketball so that is something to look forward to.
