What would give me the highest quality between these two options:

1) Playing a SD dvd with a progressive scan SD DVD player but non Progressive HDTV, therefore the quality is 480i i think

or

2) Hooking my laptop up to the HDTV using the vga connecter. Then playing the dvd off the laptop onto the HDTV. Resolution on both the laptop and tv is 1280 x 768?

1. The only non-progressive HDTVs are CRTs, however, these HDTVs always convert the incoming (SD) signal to a higher format. Most convert the signal to 1080i, while a few older ones convert SD signals to 480P.

A PS DVD player sends the signal as 480p and it will not be "downconverted" by an HDTV to 480i, since HDTVs can't natively display 480i.

2. Please advise the make/model of your TV? Most people would probably say this option is going to provide the better PQ.

Note that the native format is 1366 x 768, not 1280 as you reported earlier.
