I have set a budget of $1500 and narrowed down my search to a few
Samsung DLP models. All prices have shipping included (delivered).

Samsung HL-S5686W (56" 720p) - $1249.99
Samsung HL-S5087W (50" 1080p) - $1440.00
Samsung HL-S5086W (50" 720p) - 1159.99
Samsung HL-S6186W (61" 720p) - 1549.99 ($50 over budget, but may consider it)

Viewing distance is approximately 9'. Right now I will just be using it to watch television, DVD's, play PS2 and Nintendo Wii. However, I will be purchasing a PS3 in December so Blu-ray will be a consideration. I realize that most PS3 games will not support 1080p, but the Blu-ray will. I'm trying to decide if the extra beans are worth it for 1080p when only Blu-ray supports it, and I will be sitting 9' away. The bigger seller for the 1080p model would be the 10,000:1 contrast ratio compared to the 720p's 2,500:1. I compared the models in the store and I my untrained eye was unable to tell much difference, however the sets were not right next to eachother, I had to look at one, turn around, walk a bit and look at another, so it was dificult to get a good comparison. I am looking for some advice on guidance before I make my final decision.
Respectfully:
John

Get the 1080p because there are a few 1080p games for the PS3 plus Blu-Ray will blow your mind away. The 10,000:1 contrast is also amazing, so you can't go wrong there. 9 feet away will be a perfect distance for all these models but the 1080p factor alone give the S5087W an edge over the other models.

I bought thre 5086 instead of the 5087, At the time there was a 600 dollar difference in price. At the price you have, I'd go with the 5087. I too could see no difference in the store but for the little extra it may come in handy down the road.

I have gaming buddies that all love there 87 series.
