My HiDef TV is a Mitsubishi WD-577321 DLP Television.

I have a DVD player (Pioneer DV-535) hooked to Video Input 1
VHS (Hitachi VT-F391)to Video Input 2
Hi Def Box (Motorala DCT-6416) hooked to component 1 input.

No problems watching Hi Def Box.

When viewing DVDs or VHS tapes I get a grey translucent box (about half the size of the screen) appears in the center of the screen. When I reformat picture it solves the problem for several seconds, then reappears.

Does anybody know what this could be?

You have both the DVD and "hi-def box" on input 1? That may be the problem.

As a follow-up... if you have a "hi-def box" connected using composite (yellow), then you're not viewing "HD".

Please provide make/model info of the TV and external devices to make troubleshooting easier for all of us. Thanks!

I found the problem, and wanted to share it with anyone that might experience a similar fate.

Buried on page 51 of my manual it has a warning about setting caption settings. "When analog text closed captioning is selected, a large black or gray box appears on your TV screen if no signal is broadcast"

I turned off the captions and the box disappeared!
