Got this player over the holiday season for the price of the Sony BD player and prefer it to any other BD player out there, exception being the PS3 since it offers gaming, too.
The unit looks great, even when off, uses a manual flip-down door for accessing the disc tray, offers a large readout and easy-to-use remote.

Pros: Fast loading, almost as fast as the PS3; easy navigation playback and setup; excellent picture, 7.1 analogue audio outputs; Java-enabled; plays CDs and DVD-Audio discs; looks great with your other gear.

Cons: Higher purchase cost than PS3; no lighted remote; no internet port for upgrading or on-line BD operation.

This unit does everything right and Panasonic has been great with upgrade support:
I can burn a CD-R from their website and get any software upgrades without a problem.
Their service department so far has been excellent, even when I was missing the free BD disc inside the box and the other two that were to come with it (by on line request), I got all three free by just asking for their assistance.

It plays back almost everything I put in it except HD-DVDs and SACDs. :D

Well worth the price, better if discounted like mine was ($300 off), especially if you don't require/need an internet interface.

If you decide on the Blu-ray format vs. HD-DVD or just want an excellent all-around BD player, it is a great component for your HT rack. :)

Have you compared this to the PS3 in terms of PQ, or noticed anything that makes it nicer, or better than a PS3?

Yes, the picture on the same BD was compared with my PS3 and the quality of both audio and video were the same-high.
The great thing about the Panasonic is that it stacks well with your other HT gear, doesn't require as big a venilation area as the PS3, is lighter on your shelves (the PS3 is heavy) and uses an IR remote vs. the game controller or optional remote (I bought) that uses Bluetooth-only.
This way, you can copy IR command codes or "learn" them to your universal remote vs. the PS3's which you cannot. One remote only for all if you desire.
Further, the PS3 does not do SD DVD upconversion, the Panasonic does it every bit as good as my HD-DVD player, too.
So you can ditch all your other disc players, including your CD player, even Sony's BD player cannot do that! :D
