Does anybody know what most colleges provide TV-wise? I think most provide cable, but what about HD? Do you have the option to at least pay extra for an HD STB?

If there is a college that accepted you, call and ask.

In the college my son went to, they would only let you have cable and the dorm room was provided with an outlet. I you wanted cable, you ordered it from the cable provider and paid for it yourself. I would think that if you could order cable, you could order HD. It would all depend upon the particular college/university you plan on attending. I imagine that if the college you're interested in has a website or you can obtain pamplets etc. from your school counselor, you may be able to find out more. :grandpa9:

The college I attended had cable in all the dorm rooms. You could pay for HBO, Showtime etc.... I would assume you could get an HD box too, but with the cable being split so many times, I would wonder if you would have a good enough signal without some kind of booster.

You could also just wait till you actually get accepted at the college of your choice. More than likely, you'll be living in a dorm and will have a roommate. That roommate may already have a tv and possibly and HD set. In my son's case, his roommate provided the tv, my son provided the stereo and the mini refrigerator. They went in together on the cost of the cable provider. They both opted for loft beds which gave more floor space for their desks and lounge chairs. You can't actually make many decisions in regards to your living arrangements till you get closer to the enrollment date. In both my son's and daughter's case, they knew in advance who their roommates were going to be. They were able to call them and settle some of the room decisions (who would provide what so you don't duplicate items as there's not a lot of space in a dorm room) in advance.

For now, I would just concentrate on where you want to go.....6 months can make a lot of difference in what's available should you need to go ahead and buy a tv. :grandpa9:

Don't most schools require freshman to reside in a dorm the first year? At least in the old days they did :grandpa9:

I know all the florida state schools do not. Cannot vouch for other states, but I would assume most allow it. If you are allowed to commute from your home why can't you commute from an apartment?

I was speaking of my freshman year, by the by.

Good for you efourdee. I’m a strong beliver in always paying your own way.
This is a fun forum and some comments are made to elicit a smile at times- nothing more or less. ;)

On retrospect I think buying them a car would be cheaper in the long run.
