View Full Version : Receiver Hum

I recently bought an Integra receiver (model 5.3) to replace my 11 year old Onkyo Pro-Logic unit. I've noticed that it has a hum to it when it's on, coming from inside the unit. It's not loud, and I can only hear it when the room is fairly quiet, from within 10 feet. And I can feel a vibration on the case of the unit. I don't hear any hum coming from the speakers.

My old Onkyo never hummed or vibrated, so I thought maybe something was wrong with the transformer. I returned it to the store, and they compared it with another Integra 5.3 and they both sounded the same. The salesman didn't think the hum and vibration were abnormal, but they swapped it anyway to appease their fussy customer.

Is this hum and vibration normal for new receivers? The 5.3 is listed at $600 (I got it for $500 bundled with some Energy speakers). Wondering if this is common in this price range.

I'm not familiar with that model. I will ask a friend who works with A/V. There are not many things that will hum. Transformers as you noted. I think you would know if it had an internal fan.

I can't recall any of the receivers I've owned that had hummed. My Onkyo 787 doesn't that I've noticed. Now I'll have to go stick my ear next to it.

Checked with the guys at the store. They don't sell that particular line of Onkyo's. A guy here at work has a 500 series, the unit has an internal fan.
