View Full Version : 4:3 Picture on some DVD movies
I have rented a few movies that only play in 4:3 on the HD Set. I assumed they were "Made for TV" movies and were never shot in 16:9.
Is that correct?

Some movies, specially older ones were shot in 4:3. In other cases studios will release both a 4:3 version of a DVD and a widescreen version or the DVD will be doublesided with the 4:3 version on one side and the widescreen on the other.
Do you have an example of one of these movies?
DVDs and TV programmes come in all sorts of aspect ratios:

Looks like it's a 1.33:1 aka 4:3 ratio release on DVD per amazon's description of it.

Even some new releases are also put out in the "pan & scan" 4:3 format. Always look for the "wide screen" version of the DVD. Avoid the "full screen" version. Many people who have SD TV and 4:3 displays would rather see a "full screen" than a letterbox 16:9 image . . . Since SD TV's outnumber widescreen (HD) TV's-- 4:3 DVDs will be around for a while . . .
