I have the VCR connection of my combo dvd/vcr hooked up to my AVR via composite cables (from reading the manual I think that this is the highest quality connection I can make for the VCR). The AVR is hooked up to my TV via HDMI. Should I be able to get a picture from the VCR via this setup? Right now all I see is a thin green line that goes up and down the screen (I do hear audio). Or, do I need to send this analog signal via a connection to my TV that is not HDMI, ie component?

Chances are your AVR does not 'upconvert' analog signals to digital...Connect the AVR using a composite out put from the AVR to the TV and it should work well...

If you have S-Video connections you would probably get a little bit more quality than Composite connections.

That is true, but it seems the OP has a DVD/VCR combo. Every DVD/VCR combo unit I have seen does not send VHS video through S-Video, unless it is of the S-VHS type. The S-Video and Component video are for DVD only, and most combos say this in the manual, as well as on the back where the outputs are.
If you are referring to the AVR having a "monitor" or main s-video output, then yes, he could run s-video from his AVR to TV and use that for a slighty better picture, but that's only assumming that the AVR can upconvert composite video to s-video.
Based on the specs for the AVR it will convert composite or S-video to component video, not HDMI.

Correct, I cannot use S video for the VCR output.

Is there any way I could keep my HMDI hookup as is for TV, DVD, etc and connect to my TV via a non-HDMI cable and still have the VCR pix show on the same TV input?
