Helping my neighbor with a set up. He has a new Sharp 50" Plasma. Comcast hooked up an HDMI from the HD box as well as one from his DVD. He got no sound on either and the picture on the box for non-HD channels was broken up and shifted so far to the right that it couldn't be adjusted. We tried every setting on the box and TV to no avail. Then switched back to component cables with audio composite and it worked fine. Is this a defective box or is there something obvious about a hook up error?

Have a look at the setup information in the following link for the Motorola STBs. In the audio menu you may need to enable HDMI or something different.

Also, check the audio setup menu of the TV. They are usually defaulted to HDMI for the HDMI input, however, check to make sure.

The same holds true for the setup of the DVD player - make sure HDMI is enabled under the setup options for audio. The default may be bitstream or dolby digital for example. If you're not using HDMI for the video on the DVD player, then you're probably not getting the upconversion desired from the DVD player.

I'm assuming that no AV Receiver is involved.

If an AVR is involved, then digital audio connections from each device to the AVR are necessary, as are the proper settings in each device.
