Considering buying a 98 Hitachi 60 big screen for 350 bucks. Model 60sx8b/9k. I know it isnt HD, so i wanted to know how big of a deal that really is. Would use it for movies mostly. Any advise would help, and i would appriciate an info from anyone who knows anything about a 98 hitachi big screens.

Cheers,

Mike

I believe that's a 94 model, not a 98, I wouldn't pay 350 for a non HD big screen that is that old unless it's in excellent shape. Non HD CRT's can suffer from the same issues as other CRT's, burn in, guns fading over time, etc.

Check your local craigslist and other classified, you may be able to find something newer and/or a widescreen which would be better for most movies regardless if it's HD or not around your price range.

There are lots of people with older HDTVs selling for between $1 (to get them out of the house) and $300 for the years 2001-2003.

Unless you absolutely want an SDTV, there are lots better deals.

Thats good to know, i thought it was a good deal. The Hitachi is in perfect shape, and i guess the idea of having a sweet 60 big screen is appealing to me lol. I found the tv on craigslist, and better cites people know of to find deals?? I also found a Akia PT4298HD it is in perfect shape, but there is a convergence problem. The red is ghosting the main image. Its not an adjustment problem, i have read the sticky about convergency issues, but does anyone know how hard of a fix this is. I am perfectly capable of fixing somthing that may have gone fritz on the convergency board. Any info would be awesome!

Thanks,

Mike

The CRT tubes have a cooling liquid inside them. A common problem is they begin to leak and drip onto the circut board below it causing havoc. If it is one of the resistors or capacitors on the board you could be chasing it forever. I had a Sony with the old school convergence. Chased the problem for a couple of months then kicked it out the door. Went to DLP and never looked back. Gone are the days of the humungas big box in the house.

Coolant leaks are not common on this model at all. What is more common are porblems in the PIP or comb filter modules due to leaky capacitors. I would not give $350 for one of these at this age.

Keep your eyes open for awhile, spring is coming, you'll see more deals show up.

Thanks for the advice. Its weird how outdated these TVs have got. Keep the advice flowing in. Everything helps.

Cheers,

Mike
