well my dad has finally decided to get rogers high def, after our digital box keeps freezing and stuttering (all connections r good) now heres the question

should we go for the 12.95 per month box rental with 16 hd channels

or buy the box for 299 at futureshop brand new?

if we buy the box do we pay less rental just cuz they r the channels or we dont get channels at all??

The box and the service are totally separate. If you buy the box, there's no rental charge obviously, however, you still pay for your various digital services.

Currently the best deal is Digital VIP which gives you a bunch of channels for $50/mo and also gives you a free SD STB that you can use on another TV, or put in the closet.

The HDSTBs have been on sale for as little as $199 (SA3250HD) and the HD DVRs (SA8300HD) have been on for as little as $299, however, that was a few months ago and they ran out of stock and are just now getting stock back and I believe the price is like $600. People love their DVRs. Please see the following regarding Rogers HD selection:

If you don't get Digital VIP, I believe there's a $2.99/mo "digital services fee" on top of any channels you subscribe to. Check with the CSR for total charges.

my dad wants to stick with rogers, wut a technician just told me was that if we buy the box, we get the 16hd manditory channels that also come witht he rental contract. then the extra channel hd package costs extra.

so im still not sure wut the total monthly costs gonna be,.

I WAS talking about Rogers. The Rogers package is called Digital VIP and I believe you'll find it's usually the least expensive way to get digital and HD. It costs little more than the basic package and provides a couple hundred channels. The rental for the STB or DVR would be on top of that, unless you decide to purchase.

If you click on the first link in my post above, you'll see the HD offereing, which ones are free and which ones are part of the $8 HD package. You'll note that in order to get some of the HD channels, you need to subscribe to digital VIP or ultimate packages.
