I bought a digital optical cable from monoprice recently. When I am playing boxing on my PS3, the sound from the punches seems a little bit delayed. I can't really tell if it's just me imagining this or not. The only time I notice it is when some of the sound from punches are delayed, nothing else. Is that the kind of problem that would even be caused by a bad cable? Is there anyway to test it?
The problem, if the sound gets through, is not caused by the cable. The audio literally travels at the speed of light.
Are you connected to an A/V Receiver? If so, is there an audio delay setting? If you're connected directly to the TV, then try analogue audio (red/white) cables, since you won't notice the difference on TV speakers.

If only the "punches" sound delayed and nothing else... perhaps it's the game itself.
What game? What TV? What A/V receiver? and... how do you have everything connected. (Please provide make/model #s)

Fight Night Round 3 - PS3
It's an old Panasonic - not sure what the model # is
Samsung Digital Home Theater System - HT-DB120
I just used the optical cable to connect the PS3 and HTS. Then, I went in the settings on the PS3 to change my audio settings.
I just realized that I left the old A/V cables I was using still plugged in. I don't know if that would have made a difference.
** You'll be pleased to know that I am heading to Sam's Club tomorrow to get the 37" Vizio. I decided the 32 just wasn't big enough.

Is it the VX37L ? If it is, I think you'll be happy that model. I hooked up my brothers and video games look fantastic on it. You'll definitely have to adjust/calibrate the picture and turn down the backlight .

something else weird is happening. When I turn on my PS3 and my HTS, there is a loud ringing coming from the speakers. The HTS is on the Digital Input setting (since I am using the digital cable). When I take it off of the Digital Input setting, then turn the Digital Input setting back on, everything is fine.
Could this mean that it is a falty cable?

No, it's an optical cable, either it's passing a signal or it's not.

I'd say it is the stereo system,,
