View Full Version : Help me decide between Samsung LNT2342HX and Toshiba 26HL67

Hi everyone (first post). I did a search on both of these sets and turned up bupkus.

Let me explain my needs. What I'm looking for is a good set for console gaming, but also to use as a pc monitor since I'm a student and need the ease of just lugging one thing around. As far as resolution goes, I'll be perfectly happing with the maximum 720p these sets will afford me.

Now, even though the toshiba is a bigger screen, it only goes for about 80 bucks more. However, this may not necessarily be construed as an advantage (if I sit close, 720p may bug me for a pc resolution). What is worse is that no store in my area carries these two models, so I have to go down to best buy and compare models of the same series from each brand.

Here's the spec list for each model:

Samsung LNT2342HX: ($600)
CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lighting)
Allows the set to achieve a much higher range of the NTSC color Gamut (72% for average sets up to 92%)

I can't find the info on the bit level of the image processor on this one...

Toshiba 26HL67: ($680):
PixelPure 3G™14-Bit Digital Video Processing
Benefit: This advanced third-generation digital video processing system is capable of producing 4,096 levels of gradation for a smooth, natural-looking picture without image banding.
DynaLight™ Dynamic Back Light Control

Precise signal analysis affords 256 levels of backlight intensity. This creates dynamic contrast up to 5X that of the original panel contrast, resulting in a deeper black level that increases detail and depth, even in low light environments.

Ok, so for the inputs, they're basically the same, so I ignore those. As for the size difference, just pretend the price difference perfectly offsets that and they're equal there. What I'm really looking for are the following qualities:

High contrast: This should help games look more vivid.

High speed motion picture fidelity: Fast motion on the screen is conveyed beautifully. No visible ghosting or other associate problems.

As for high contrast, samsung's ratio of 4000:1 and the CCFL should speak for themselves. Unfortunately, Toshiba does not provide contrast info, but they do have a lot of features to preserve contrast and color.

High speed motion fidelity: They both have the same response time, but I'm curious if the Toshiba's features would help here.

So, anyone have any experience with these product lines. Any suggestions? Thanks!
