When someone asks about using their analog set after the DTV transition, the conventional answer is 'Oh, if you have cable you don't need to worry about that'. But FCC chairman Martin doesn't seem to think the cable issue is so clear cut.

Confusing things even more, there is still talk about rules prohibiting cable companies from degrading the digital picture. How do you send an unaltered digital picture (HDTV variety) to an analog set? You can't have it both ways.

Much of what the cable companies will do has been the subject of speculation, conjecture. I believe they will continue to reduce the number of analogue channels they offer to make room for more HD and other services.

Since cable STBs are so inexpensive, they can afford to give them to customers if required. See the following thread for some developments already proceding.

Subsidized OTA STBs have already been discussed for poor people who only have access to OTA. (different subject)

If you are a cable subscriber and will remain a cable subscriber, there's no need for concern no matter what type of TV you have. Any changes that they implement that affects your existing service, they will (should) inform you about any necessary hardware changes/requirements (if necessary).

lot of cable customers may not have digital boxes after the transition. Assuming there are still customers with analog equipment, the proposal is asking what should cable operators be required to do," said an FCC official, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The anonymous official has no clue. A STB can be made to deliver whatever resolution needed. So what if then analog TV is looking at a letterbox program. I do it all the time with my analog TV that is connected to my DISH 622 receiver. MY old Pioneer OTA reciever had a 480i output also.
