I'm new to this whole HDTV thing. I recently bought a 1080i RCA. Anyway, I'm thinking of just getting the add on drive for the Xbox 360, but the day after I bought my TV my Xbox quit and I had to send it to Microsoft. So, I haven't been able to see how DVDs will look through this. How will standard DVDs look when I switch the components to HDTV?

Also, I've heard mixed reviews about the Xbox drive, but in all reality, whats my best bet? I already have the Xbox, so should I just spend the $200, or should I spend the extra $150 on the Toshiba stand alone player? Keep in mind my TV is 1080i.

One more thing, does anyone know what five HD-DVDs come with the Toshiba player?

Standard DVD's will look the same, they are encoded in 480i, adding an HD-DVD drive isn't going to improve them. HD-DVD's in the HD-DVD drive will look better because they are encoded in HD.

What player are you looking at that is only $150 more then the 360 add on?

What I meant was, would the xbox itself upconvert the standard DVDs? I was told it would. And the DVD player was is a Toshiba HDA2. I saw it at Circuit City.

I believe it does, you are still starting with 480i source material so it may or may not improve PQ, depends on what does a better job of scaling to 1080i, the 360 or your TV's internal scaler.

I’ve linked to the form that you mail in for the free HDDVD offer. You will see what HDDVD’s are involved. If you think about it you are in essence getting the HDDVD player for the same price as the X-Box add on plus the advantages of advance audio codec support.

The price of the Toshiba HD-A2 can be had for $329. In addition you will get an additional discount if you take advantage of there credit card incentive. When you combine this offer with the 5 free HDDVD offer it is very difficult to pass up. That is $100 of free software.

Your location says London. Hope its London somewhere in the USA cause shipment to the UK will negate any pricing advantage.
