Ouch...even though WallyWorld didn't not sell the quantity like big HT retailers, it made these retailers drop their prices and margins, which bottomed-out profit margins for every other retailer.
What I am hoping for is the higher-quality LCD sets and 1080p plasma sets (PDPs) to help regain some of the profitablity to these remaining chains (and remaining stores).
The average consumer grabbed the low price flat panels, though not the best in their line of models/manufacturers (exception Panasonic) and ran with it.
Whether of not these buyers actually hooked these HDTVs up to an HD source is anybody's guess, however.
I for one, am pushing the 120Hz LCDs or those with faster response times to eliminate blurring/pixelation with my clients.
These panels will be somewhat more expensive until the factories build up supplies and prices drop (while still holding up profit margins).
Also I think these LCD panel sets, including the 1080p PDPs, will offer greater value over the long term for the buyers despite prices being higher and I don't think WallyWorld is going to offer these models or at big discounts like the last time around.
Good article...thanks!

FYI, I was with some family in the foothills of Kentucky at a local Wal-Mart that offered grocery and other items-a larger one than you'd find some other places, as these are different from place to place.
Anyway, the Wal-Mart offered 42" HDTV panels as low a $988 and $1188 (name brand) along LCD RPTVs as big as 61".
Now, all I had to do is convince the store employee there to ask the customer if they had HD service when making the sale.
(No clue as to what I was talking about, what a shame).

This weeks Walmart ad had a 42" LCD for $988 and a 32" LCD for $698. We still have our Circuit City but our Rex is closing down. We lost CompUSA 2 years ago. Still have Best Buy.

On the grocery side, we lost all our Delchamps, Food Worlds and Albertsons stores. That leaves Super Walmarts, Winn Dixie and Publix as the only brand markets around (4-5 mom & pops still).
