I currently have my Phillips HDTV (720p) connected via HDMI through SA STB 8300..and my upconvert phillips DVD player connected with component video cables. Sometimes when switching channels (HD to SD ) the screen goes snow, and sometimes I have to either keep changing channels back and forth or turn off everything for it to correct itself. I believe this is called a handshake problem? Question is: I want to try the reversal connection of what I currently have. STB to HDTV with component, DVD with HDMI to see if the snow goes away and if my PQ on the HD channels improves. When doing this, will I need to go back into the set up wizard on the STB and reconfigure? thanks for the advice

I can't speak for SA boxes, but for Motorola you do not need to go into the set up and change from component to HDMI/DVI. As long as your resolutions are set (in your case I assume you have both 720p and 1080i selected) you should be able to swap your box hook up from HDMI to component.

You MAY need to reconfigure depending on the capabilities of the TV. For example, some TVs don't accept certain formats like 480i via HDMI, however, it doesn't appear you're going "that way"..

Most upconverting DVD players don't upconvert except via HDMI, so that's the appropriate connection for the HDMI - you had it "backwards".

With proper calibration of the inputs, you should see little/no difference between HDMI and component video, assuming the same signal (say from a STB).

If you feel the need to use HDMI for both, you can always purchase an HDMI switch if you only have one HDMI input.
