Hi, new to the forum. Hope someone can explain. I live in NY and would like to receive HDTV signals from local stations like CBS, NBC, etc. I have a DirecTv dish and a toshiba HDTV Box. I only receive the HDTV signal on Channel 109 From Directtv and channel 509. How do I go about getting the local signals?
Please help.

You need an over the air (OTA) antenna to get local digital broadcasts. There should be an additional input in the back of your set top box for this. To check the availability of OTA broadcasts in your area go to titantv.com. They can also help you select an antenna with their "antenna selector".

I live out on long Island and have purchased the Vu-190Xr antenna from Radio shack and my reception rots. Where abouts are you located?

You either have a signal or you don't. No crappy or anything like that. It's either there or it's not. I believe you are viewing a analog signal and not digital.
I'm 47 miles away from the nearest transmitter and get real crappy analog signals but I can receive the digital signals with no problem.
If you have an RCA F38310, you have to do a channel scan setup so the tv will recognize the stations. If your analog station is say channel 6, then the DT station will be 6-1, 6-2 or 6-3. You can also find out what channel they actually are broadcasting on and tune to it. My NBC is channel 10 analog, but broadcasts digital on 31. If you tune to 31 it automatically switches to 10-1. There are 3 potential channels for each Digital channel. My NBC station puts a 1080i letterbox on one, a 480i on one and the live weather radar on the third one. When broadcasting a HD signal they use all three for extra bandwith.
By the way, I turned my antenna towards Richmond, 65 miles away and picked up the NBC digital channel there with a 65 signal strength.
On your set you can view signal strengh, on the remote, push menu, scroll down to assistance, push ok, scroll down to antenna, push ok, push arrow right it will list all the stations analog reports N/A, digital will have a value.
