I bought this tv in Jan of this year and my bulb blew yesterday. I was expecting it to last at least 2 years, not 6 months. I was surprised when I called the warranty number. They answered the phone within 2 minutes and said they would send it 2nd day air as soon as we faxed our reciept(which is done). Hopefully we have it soon. Watching a 27 incher and it looks tiny next to the 65 incher. lol

My question, since I forgot to ask the: My tv uses the 150 turbo light. Just curious if they will send the 180 turbo light, since that is what the new models use? Is there even a noticable difference?

As an RPTV owner I don't have the bulb issue (I'll be having my own issues) but was wondering, IF the bulb is going to "blow" that often (or even in two years), would it be practical just to buy one and have it on hand so you don't have all that down-time (albeit, even a couple of days) waiting for a replacement?
How much would one of those bulbs cost?

Around $250... ;)

But IMO, it is wise to have a new "spare" in your inventory for a quick replacement when needed.

Not everyone I'm sure has $250 bucks just lying around to purchase something that will sit on a shelf...but for the "avid" viewer, (and who amongst us isn't?) who would find themselves without TV for a couple-three days, it could very well be a solution to preserving their sanity when left with seeking alternatives (perhaps a good time to finally finish that book or get that colonoscopy you've been putting off).

Here's a thought...for the DLP, what a great public-relations gesture it would be if Mitsubishi would include with each new DLP purchased, an included "spare bulb"?....
(oh fughedaboutit, what was I thinkin' anyway? :rofl2: ).

Whether is sits on the shelf or not....

It's nice to know that you can watch TV ASAP as opposed to having someone look at your "tube".

$250 now or $250 later...

It's one of those unforseen/overlooked ongoing costs that no one is even concerned about at time of purchase. Then... when disaster strikes, lot's of whining that they have to "wait" for service/replacement.

Just my observations over the years...

As an anecdote:
My buddy bought a JVC DiLA a few years ago. I suggested that he get a spare lamp, which he never did. When it blew, he called and said that he should have taken my advice, because even though his extended warranty covered the replacement, he was disappointed to be without a TV for 3 days.

mitts sent the bulb by 2nd day air. I had it in my possession within 48 hours of making the phone call. I would love to have an extra bulb on hand but I have a 5 year extended warranty on it, so it would kind of be a waste of money. It does suck not being able to use the tv for 2 days, but I just brought the 27 inch in from another room. No biggie, but a tv that cost this much, should last more than 6 months. Lesson learned, technology sucks :grandpa9: lol.

.
Sometimes we've seen the question raised by a consumer:
"Should I purchase an Extended Warranty for my newly purchased big-screen?"
...and many times the answer is: "No, it comes with a one-year warranty anyway so I'll take a chance, hope that nothing goes wrong during what would be those warranty years, and save myself a few hundred dollars."

It seems to me, in the case of someone purchasing a DLP, with it's unpredictable bulb/lamp lifespan, that this would be a no-brainer. At a cost of up to $250 per bulb and using paranoid's experience here, it's quite possible that a DLP bulb might need to be replaced numerous times and that, in itself, would justify paying the $300-500 premium for the insurance that the Extended Warranty would provide.

Bottom line...this entire bulb/lamp issue, and the fact that the bulb no doubt will need to be replaced at some point during the first couple of years, MUST be taken into consideration by anyone when contemplating the purchase of any DLP TV, regardless of the manufacturer, and therefore there should be no question as to whether or not to purchase an Extended Warranty.

To note:
BEFORE purchasing an ESP, be SURE that it covers lamp replacements. Many do not. Make sure you see it in writing and don't assume or go by the "word" of the salesperson.
