In the PS3 box (as I remember) had the standard analogue composite video cable with left and right stereo audio (red and white) cable only.
I would get an inexpensive HDMI output cable for the best use of an HD set for the video part and if you are using just the HDTV set for sound, use the red and white RCA connections.
In most HDTVs, there is a red and white RCA input jack for audio next to one of the (if there are more than one) HDMI inputs, usually found on the back of the HDTVs.
Otherwise, you can buy a component cable with analogue audio jacks for $25(US) as an optional accessory.
Welcome to the forum and what part of Australia are you from?
You see, I have been in Melbourne, Sydney, and Cairns, among others - wonderful country!

I have a Sharp Aquos LC-20B8U that has composite connectors and what looks like a pc/VGA connector that is labeled "analogue". The TV will do up to 1080i ... what cable do I need to get an HD signal from the PS3 to the TV?
The PS3 has an HDMI output connector and then the other one (I forget now what it is labled ...
Thanx!

formula1man,
Western Australia, nice...I have been to Perth and the surrounding area, too, thank you.
Why don't you first try with the supplied connector in the PS3 box and go from there, just a suggestion and go from there.
Unless the exact type of connections that are on the back of the display are known, it could be difficult to assist you properly.

scabrous1,
Your display has a component video and stereo RCA (red and white) connectors, so buy the optional Sony connector for this if composite video is insufficient for your needs.

gparris,
thank you ... I appreciate the links and your time.
Just a quick clarifying question to satisfy my curiousity: what is the difference between "composite video" (I assume that means plugging into the component video jacks on the display from the "Non HDMI" connector on the PS3) and "component video"?

...so that is useful to some extent ... thank you. What cable comes with the PS3 -- is it a basic "composite" cable only? (the PS3 I have been asking about is not mine, but a nephew I purchased it for.
thnx!

Digging around for where I put that cable (I don't throw things like this away) the answer is yes.
Composite is an analogue video-only connection (yellow jack hole), better than RF, not as good as S-Video and not the same as component, but the RCA pin connection looks similar.
Considering that the PS3 is a BD device and its price, one would think a HDMI cable inside the box would be included, but I couldn't find one in there except this simple connector.
Check monoprice for good, inexpensive HDMI connectors if the nephew is using sizeable HDTV set for display/use.
Otherwise, that link I provided for the component video accessory would be a better than composite cabling for video, IMO.

There is no HDMI cable in the box, if your TV has HDMI input you should get it... it's the best connection for you PS3...
Besides the unit, there is only 1 wireless 'SIXAXIS' controller, 1 mini USB cable (to charge your controller), 1 power cable, 1 CAT5 network cable, 1 AV cable (composite) and printed manual... that's all that is in the box for 60Gb PS3 I have.
Also, it seems Sony will announce soon new 40 Gb PS3 version which should be much cheaper... it will probably cost $399... you can easily and cheaply (around $100) upgrade HD to 160GB... I upgraded my PS3 from 60Gb to 250Gb for $180.

Back in 2006 (when the current generation of consoles was still called the next generation) we did our first Xbox 360 vs. PlayStation 3 graphics comparison. Since then we've released rounds 2, 3, and 4, but we hadn't touched the third rail--the PC--until now. The graphics comparison features started out as a way to examine which console had better graphics, but readers began asking us to include PC image comparisons for games available on all three platforms. We focused on more recent games for our current comparison, because those are the games people are still buying and playing. You'll likely recognize many of the shots from our previous graphics comparisons. The results aren't terribly surprising, but the differences are still interesting to see. A well-equipped PC beats both consoles easily--of course, that same PC also costs three to four times more than either of the consoles.
