I've been researching the whole DVI issue. I came across these press releases from Silicon Image, link-http://www.siimage.com/press/09_24_02.asp- this is the original receiver and transmitter for the DVI standard. Now take a look at the later press release ,link-http://www.cmd.com/press/01_09_03.asp-this is a new receiver and transmitter to be used for the HDMI standard which will build upon and is to be backwards compatible with DVI/HDCP but it will be using a smaller more user friendly S/PDIF connector. They also plan this connector carrying both the video and audio to replace all the other analog connectors. I haven't been able to find out whether this will be an RCA style connector or will have to be a fiber optic connection due to the bandwidth issue. It looks to me like DVI is gone before it even really got started.

DVI will play out for a year or two while HDMI slowly takes over. A lot of CE firms spent a lot of R&D on DVI so they will get their moneys worth first.

Yea, it sounds about the right time for HDMI to take over. Gives the manufacturers of audio and video equiptment and reason and purpose to produce and manufacture. If we all kept the same audio and video connections, the market would get stale, no one would buy anything, because they already have it.
Now that there's a new connection with audio, there needs to be new and improved electronics. New a/v receivers, new PVRs, new DVD players. Unless you get an adapter to go from HDMI to standard RCA or to fiber. Then why even bother with HDMI at all. I guess it's a long term plan. In 5-10 years from now, all electronics will only have one connection. Unless of course a new format comes out by then, like "HDMI-Ultra" or "FHDMI (fiber HDMI)" or something like that, and it's not backward compatible, then we're back to square one. But that won't be until probably 10 years from now, when we're all nice and cosy with HDMI. ;)

Do not forget that 1394 was suppose to take us to the promised land (i.e., one cable to do it all), and we all know how well that went. HDMI has a lot of licensing issues that may keep the lower end CE products from adopting it.
And let us not foget the MPAA and the RIAA. Those boneheads are sure to throw a copy protection wrench in all of this somewhere.
I would love to clean up the back of my rack. One cable to each device...ahhh...one can only dream...
