Hi there,
New to this forum and new to HDTV and just have a basic - or at least what I hope is a basic question.

Just got a Mitsubishi HD-Ready bigscreen, (standard is 480, but is capable of a 1080i) , and am renting a house where the cable is included in the rent, so I'm not willing to pay for a HD cable box and since I'm renting, not going to get a dish.

I just have the basic (coaxial?) cable that comes from the wall and goes into the back of the TV. Would an HD receiver still work to give me at least the basic standard TV channels that are broadcast in HD?

Have been trying to read up on this on-line, but can't get a cut-and-dry answer.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Don't know what you mean by an HD Receiver. In order to see the HD channels, you either need a QAM tuner in the TV (which only allows for unencrypted HD), unless you get a CableCARD. Or you need to rent (not purchase) an HD STB (set top box) or HDPVR from the cable service provider.

Please give us more details.

- Model number of TV
- HD receiver you're considering
- name of service provider.

Have a look at:

The TV model is the Mitubishi WS-55813 - Diamond Series.

It is HD-Ready, which I have read will require an external HD Receiver / Tuner in order to get the 1080i resolution.

I'm sorry, I don't know who the cable service provider is. We are just renting the place and the cable is already included as part of the monthly rent we pay.

I don't have a model in mind, but I read that many of the major networks are now broadcasting in HD, and was just looking for something to give my existing signal a little bit of a boost.

The Samsung DTB-H260F has a QAM tuner in it that will pick up unencrypted digital broadcasts that your cable company might be sending out.

You won't see your posts immediately until you've been registered for 24 hours.
