I know im new to this but can someone tell me why Networks don't send HD signals over there normal broadcast stations as opposed to simulcasting it on another station?

The standard for broadcasting HDTV is a digital standard. Traditional broadcasts use analog signals and are incapable of broadcasting the required type of signal for HDTV. Plus, digital broadcasting is superior in that it is all or nothing, there is not degraded signal (snow, etc.) so even the migration to the digital broadcast itself is an improvement even for SDTV.

I don't know if I would consider a digital signal better because it is all or nothing. With DirecTV, on a very stormy day, I would rather put up with some snow than having to watch a black screen.

Anyway, the digital signal being all or nothing (without distortion) is a myth in my opinion. You can still get freezes and motion artifacts, and pixilation, due to a low signal.

Its like cellular phones moving to digital. You never used to get 'no signal' with a cell phone, just heavy static, but the call would go through.
