Hey guys I have a problem that maybe you can help me out with.
I just finally installed Directtv.
I have my Home Theater system pretty set up now except for the addition of DirectTV.

It's an older RCA box that im using, so it only has S-video out.
Now here is the problem. Currently i have all my other video/audio sources connected to my receiver which is a Sony receiver. From there, it goes via Component to my TV's componet input, which is also a Sony.

I am only using Componet for my other video sources and everything works fine! Now I go to connect the DirectTV receiver using the S-video out into my Sony and I get no picture on my TV. I get sound thru the Sony with no problem!

If I plug the RCA Sat receiver directly to my TV i get a picture!

Can someone tell me what is going on here? Im baffled! I checked everything to make sure that there is nothing conneced wrong and there isnt! I even tried two different brands of S-video cable!

Any help would be appreciated!

Firstly I think you're mixing up composite and component. All your other video connections are probably composite. (most receivers only have 2-3 component inputs.)

Your receiver may not "convert" S-Video to "composite video" internally (most don't). You may have to run an S-Video cable from your receiver to the TV.

Even if I'm incorrect about the assumption in the first paragraph, the second paragraph may still be correct if you substitute component for composite.

Thanks for the response 57U.

Let me clear up my setup. Currently all my other inputs are only a DVD player and an Xbox. They are both using Component into my receiver! From my receiver it goes out component into my TV's component input!

I am not using any composite video for anything else at this moment!

It kinda seems as if my receiver doesnt like going from S-video to Component!

Does that make sense? That is the only thing I could think of!

Thanks again,

Your trying to take an apple and make orange juice out of it. Your receiver can not take the S-video input and split it into component.Component is 3 seperate colors while S-vid is Color/Brightness.

Awwwww man!

I kinda feared that! Oh well, no biggie, i have enough inputs on the TV.

Thanks for all your help guys!

BTW, some new receivers do "upgrade" composite and/or S-Video inputs to "component" so that you only need to run one set of cables, but most do not.....

I guess you could say they make orange juice out of apples.

Just run an S-Video cable from the receiver like I said in my first post, or plug the sat into the TV whichever you prefer.

FYI - The only receivers I've found for under $1K that do composite and svideo upconversion to component out are the Kenwood VR-5090 and the Denon 3803.
