I found this 61 inch Akai pt-61dl34 at a local Costco store in Markham Ontario selling for $999. It is going to be my first HDTV set. I wonder if anyone has any experience with this particular set and how they like it.

Well, I bit the bullet and bought the set and have it hooked up to a samsung HD870 DVD player via HDMI. I am happy with the result. The picture is outstanding. However, I now have a problem. When I play certain discs, I do not have sound. I tried fiddling with the audio menu. No sound coming out of my kenwood reciever either. It is connected to the DVD player via RCA cables. I did not have this problem with my previous sony SDTV and DVD player. I am thinking of hooking up the DVD player to the reciever via optical cable. Any thoughts?
When you use optical or coaxial between the DVD player and the AVR (Audio/Video Receiver) (either connection is recommended), you need to set the audio output to bitstream and not HDMI.
Also, you need to select the appropriate audio option (say DD5.1) in the main menu for the DVD after it has loaded.
I assume that your AVR has DD5.1 capability. Analogue audio cables (red/white) cannot carry DD5.1 audio, only stereo, which is usually decoded by the AVR to Dolby Pro Logic.
