I was looking to buy my father a HD-DVD player for Christmas...

...Someone told me that I should just buy a DVD upconverter instead of a HD-DVD player because his tv doesn't support 1080p.

I was wondering if there was any truth to that, and what opinions you guys have on the subject?

I don't have a TV model #, but I do know that it's a LG 42" LCD.

Thanks for your time.

You should stop taking advice from whoever that someone is. ;)

It’s a shame someone would give you such bad advice. It’s apparent they have no understanding of the technology. An HDDVD player will give him a stunning picture on his display.

All legacy DVD's are encoded at 480i. Upscaling and deinterlacing to higher resolutions helps, but doesn't make it "HD".

All HD-DVD's and BluRay DVD's are encoded at 1080i or 1080p. So, the source material is always at it's top potential for reproduction on an HD display.

And... hi-def DVD players also upconvert "regular" DVD's too. IMO, you get the best of both worlds and get the best from the HDTV.

Thank you all for your responses, and I will never listen to that someone again!

Thanks again.
