Love to see what Sony has up its sleeve for something in a size above 52 inches.
You see, all it has is its 52" LCD panel sets for size, nothing to replace the sizes SXRD had or even, its past sizes of "3LCD" RPTVs, either. :(

Its SXRD sets were 55, 60 and 70" in diagonal size and now, they will have nothing to sell above 52", unless they are crazy enough to think the consumer will buy their 70" LCD panel set for over $30 THOUSAND dollars (US)...no way.

What else is there ?

Panasonics have 61" LCD RPTVs, but cnet rated them worse than SXRDs and then there is nothing after that for any RPTV size except DLPs.

My family members get headaches from them and so that is a no-go.

If our 70" Hitachi LCD RPTV ever goes out without a good repair job possibility, we will have to save up for at least the 65" Panasonic Plasma or Sharp 65" LCD panel sets, which cost more than the list price of the 70" LCD did in 2005.

I don't know but I hated to see that because when I bought my 50" my DH told me the LCD's would win and I hate being wrong. Still I love my 50" and had heard when I bought it back in May they were discontinuing the 50" but would still have 55", 60" & 65" which were just a wee bit big for the bedroom so I grabbed the 50" in all black while I could. Either that article or another one I read yesterday had them ticked at Vizio for lowering the profit margin across the board so who knows how this will all play out. I wish like heck I could rush out this week and buy a 65" SXRD to replace our 65" Mits but I don't think DH would appreciate that very much.

Correction:
Sony never made a 65" SXRD set.
It made the 70" SXRD in its XBR2 series and had plans for a 70XBR5 which it dropped some time ago.

All Sony will have is what is left in stock of the 50-55-60" SXRDs as no 70" can be found (unless someone knows a place) and the 46-50" "3LCD" RPTVs.

After the stock is gone on these, only the 52" (and smaller) LCD panel sets will be available.

I think this was short-sighted on Sony's part not to have something bigger in size to offer before it discontinued these products. :sightv:

As for bigger sizes, Panasonic and Sharp offer 65" flat panel sets, Samsung has a 61" LED DLP, Mitsubishi 65" and 73" DLP models and that is about it:
With all the competition and HDTV sales increasing, one would think there would be more out there in larger size availabilty. :D

Well with popularity of Plasma and LCD becoming almost the standard now for the TV industry and the prices continue to drop rapidly. We just need to hope that over the next two years or so 60"+ versions of these technologies will become much more affordable.

Our 70" Hitachi set has just developed a large halo ring in the middle of it that can be seen in solid-colour scenes.
Now, I don't know how many light engines it will take under warranty to replace to fix this problem, if indeed these are still available.

I see a battle with CC trying to get it fixed and if they try to replace it with a 73" DLP the spouse is going to be aggravated because of the rainbows.

My guess is that our alternate choice that "got away" 3 years ago, a 73" CRT RPTV, should have somehow surfaced, but it is no longer available anywhere.

From our seating distance in our HT area, a larger size 65" or more is a requirement to get an immersive picture and to see the details that HDTV can offer.
Quite honestly, with Sony not offering the 70" SXRD anymore and flat panels going up to 65" in any reasonable price range, the "reasonable" exchange for this set will not be the 65" Sharp LCD panel in CC's website, will it? :(

Since they are stopping production of the rear LCD units, what will happen to the production of tv replacement bulbs?

I'm sure they'll be available for many years to come (10 to 12 years maybe?).

Well, my 70" Hitachi just went out of the house today for an optical block replacement, even though the repair tech thought it was only a replacement bulb issue (got that replaced).
If the optical block/light engine on this 720p LCD RPTV works, I will stick with it for another year or more if possible...but a 60" SXRD just won't do.
Now a 70" SXRD is almost impossible to find at any store, which stinks.
My neighbour is trying to convince themselves to get an SXRD before February and I try to tell them that the balance of stock will disappear with SuperBowl Sunday sales if not already for the 60A3000.
While it has been already picked out as a decision what with me consulting and shopping for them, it is still not purchased...all I can say is:
You wait - you lose out - and I am not too sorry for you! :headb:
