Hello I am new to this site first of all and would like to say hello and second I do not have an HD tv but i still have a problem and came here to see if anyone could help. I have a SONY KP-61V80 rear projection and it just turned off meaning screen blacked out and then the standy by/timer light came on and and then I smelled an electrical burn smell coming from the TV, I tried turning it off but the front on/off button was inoperable so I held the button down then the stand by/timer light starting blinking 4 times then stopped and continued to flash 4 times and pause repeatedly. So my question is, is there a way to fix this myself or should I just junk it and buy a new TV which by the way is not what I want cause I love this paticular projection but what can I do. Please help. Thank you for your time and attention.

Usually if you a smell an electrical burning smell chances are your not going to beable to fix it yourself. So then the question is how old is the TV and what did you spend intially on it??

I'm guessing the TV is a good 4 years old or so. Great TV at the time but with the technology changes with HDTV I'd take this chance to go get a new HDTV. Check out the new Sony SXRD's they can be had for around $2000 and less.

Here is a link to CC for the 60" SXRD on sale for $1849.99

If you want to save a few hundred you can drop down to the 55".

These are some of the best TV's on the market reguardless of technology. Alot of TV for the price.

Yeah I know I should get a new TV with all the new technology out there now, but I really like this TV and if there is a chance that some one can help me in the right direction on what to look for with a 4 Flash standby/timer led possible fix or general discription of what the code means and where to start looking then I want to try an fix it, at least so that I can use it for a game room in my next house cause I would hate to throw it out and have someone fix it for like $200.00 bucks and I would hate to destroy it to later find out that I could have fixed it for $200.00 . You get what I'm saying. But DAMN thats a good price on that 60" projection I might just go and buy it cause its a great deal. Thanks for your opinion but I would still like to know how to fix it or where to start looking, if you can help me please do. Thanks again.

You could call Sony direct for free and they could tell you or point you in the direction of what it means (I'm sure the meaning is quite vague though). Chances are a trained tech is going to have to look at it and that is going to cost money. Almost any work a tech is going to do is going to cost $500+.

I wish I could get $500 for anything that I do. My charges average about half that on CRT RPTVs.

Well Thanks for the reply and I really do not want to spend $500 + for something I am sure is just a minor fix. I guess that no one else has had this problem and found out what it was and can steer in me in the right direction for a curious look not that I would expect to fix it but at least I would not be blind sided by a repair shop telling me to "junk it" cause it is unrepairable or way to expensive , only to find out that he fixed it for next to nothing and sold it for like $500. I only want to know what the code means and what fixes have people come across to address this problem.
OH WELL. Thank you again for the reply and all our help.

4 binks could be a vertical output failure or a failure in the horizontal or flyback areas. Some observations and troubleshooting are needed at this point.

mickaya21,

If your not a trained TV repair tech whose is fimilar with Sony or other manufactures using the same technology chances are this isn't a simple fix for a novice.

I'd call around to some local repair shops that deal with big screens (many seem to only deal with CRT and most of them are out of business or going out of business). They could come to your house and troubleshoot the problem. If your experience with boards, sodering, etc. etc. I'm sure small time guy will point you in the right direction.

Bottom line when you have picture problems like this it isn't a fix you find over the internet or usually one can fix themselves. Many things could be causing the issue and it needs to be troubleshooted by a trained tech onsite.
