View Full Version : No 480i?

Hey,

I got a Samsung 50" DLP a couple of months ago and I have a weird problem. It doesn't seem to accept a 480i signal from my Explorer 8300 PVR. The PVR output 480i to my old TV, but the new one displays "No signal". I'm using HDMI cables to connect via my HDMI Switching Receiver - although it does this when connected directly as well...

It works now for the most part because I have it set up as 480p, the reason I'd prefer the 480i is so that I can use the "Just" stretch mode instead of the 16:9 Full Stretch setting when watching 4:3 television... (it only stretches the edges instead of the full picture). The TV won't allow the "Just" stretch when doing 480p, 720p, or 1080i.

Any help would/advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Craddie

Never mind. I just read 57u's post on the SA boxes more closely and saw the note that many HDTV's don't accept 480i via HDMI. Man this HDCP business is killing me. :shootout:

There are many HDTVs, especially Samsungs that don't accept 480i via HDMI. You can use 480P or use component video cables. Please see the following threads where this is discussed:

Since you have a DLP, there is no reason to stretch the image. You should be watching 4:3 as 4:3 and 16:9 as 16:9 for the best picture quality with no distortion.

I would have thought that the TV would be able to stretch 480P, but perhaps not.

Ok, now I'm confused again. My BD Player (PS3) is also going to the TV through the receiver via HDMI and I can use the "Just" stretch when viewing DVDs..... There HAS to be a fix for this but my brain hurts....

Thanks 57u. I agree with you that I should watch in 4:3 since no image retention with DLP, but the black bars drive my wife crazy... :)

Make sure you've got the STB set to 480P STANDARD, 720P and 1080i in the advanced setup wizard (can check the formats on the front of the unit when tuned to SD channels). You also need to enable Passthrough or in your case auto-HDMI/DVI in the "set picture format" - press settings twice to get there. All explained in the SA FAQ.

Thanks, I'm very familiar with how the PVR should be set, I was just really confused why it wasn't taking the 480i signal being a new switcher to HDMI. I may deal with it, I may go back to component - who knows!
