I have a 5.1 channel rec'vr now and I am upgrading to a 7.1 rec'vr. Can I leave two of the 7.1 channels unpopulated without damaging the unit?

Thanks

yes... should not be a problem.

When some of my clients either upgrade to a new AV Receiver (AVR), many don't have the room, space or spouse approval for the additonal 2 back surround channels, at least in the beginning.
So we just connect the 5.1 surround setup without incident.
The back channels, if these exist in the DVD (DD EX or DTS 6.1) or high def disc (if you have it) will blend or "mix" into the 2 side/back surrounds for audio, instead.
It is easier to expand or create product lines for items such as AVRs to make them all 7.1 vs. 6.1 or 5.1 for the most part, so that is the trend to all-7.1.
Another thing when we do setups (some of the time) is use those 2 back surrounds (as in 7.1) for an additional room (or patio/4-season room) for stereo music, too, as many AVRs offer this feature as well.
-Enjoy your setup and welcome to the forum!
