I have my sony hooked up to my denon 788 receiver with HDMI. Plus the audio is hooked up with 2 audio cables. I was wondering if I could use the coaxial digital audio output on the Sony and attach to the opt in on the Denon? to get Digital??

If you are asking if you can "passthrough" the TV and still get DD5.1, the answer is no. See:

If you're asking if, when using the internal ATSC/QAM tuner, you can use the digital output on the TV to feed digital audio to the AVR, then the answer is yes. Usually the digital output on the TV is optical, so you would connect optical to optical, or coaxial to coaxial, not coaxial to optical, which would require a converter.

Do you mean, can you connect a coax output to an optical input?
If so, not directly, they just aren't the same thing, however, there are small converters available just for that purpose.
They come in two flavors, optical to coax, and coax to optical. In your case, you'd want to coax to optical (or to be technical, as SDIF to TOS-LINK converter) See this Parts Express Link (http://www.part***press.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&Partnumber=180-960).
I can testify that they work well. I had the same problem, a Mitsubishi TV with coax digital output, and a Sony 6.1 A/V receiver with only unused optical inputs. I got the converter and does the job. If you are unfamiliar with optical plugs and cables like I was, be aware that the little black thingies you see in the optical jack of the converter and receiver are just protective plugs that have to be pulled out, and the little nylon sleeves on the ends of the optical cable also have to be pulled off. It took me a few minutes to figure that out and make everything fit :headb:
