I recently installed a Hisense DB2010 Digital OTA Tuner on my boss's Sony KP53HS30 TV. It has a 53 inch screen with a 4:3 format. When I set the digital tuner to 1080i it automatically changes to Sony's 16:9 Enhancement mode and I get a picture that only fills a third of the screen and is overly compressed. I have set the tuner to a 4:3 format and the 16:9 Enhancement Mode still overides it. I contacted Sony and they tell me that whenever the TV senses a HD image the 16:9 Enhancement mode kicks in. Does anyone know if the 16:9 Enhancement mode can be disabled using the service menu? Thanks, Michael
There may be a setting in the TV's user mode to do this. It's rarely necessary to go into the TV's service menu to effect the proper changes to the aspect ratio on a TV.
Also, ensure that the OTA Tuner itself is set up properly for 16:9 TVs, etc.

With this Sony TV and others I have read about there is no way to override the 16:9 Enhancement Mode using the remote. If the TV senses a HD signal higher than 480p it automatically switches to the 16:9 Enhancement Mode. When you try disable it with the remote the options are grayed out and not selectable. Thanks for the link. I will check it out and let you know if I find a solution.
With the TV having a 16:9 enhancement mode (often called vertical compression) you need to set the STB up as though you have a 16:9 TV - that's the purpose of the enhancement mode - to take advantage of the additional resolution. The 16:9 image on a true HD channel will then fill the 4:3 screen from side to side and there will be bars above/below the image. If the HD channel has a 4:3 upconverted programme, you will see black bars all around.
SD channels (with 480i signals) should fill the 4:3 screen.
