All,

I got this today from "The Retail Bridge"

Circuit City To Accept HD DVD Trade-Ins
Don't worry HD DVD buyers; Circuit City feels your pain.

That's why, if you bought a now-all-but-obsolete HD DVD player from the retailer in the last three months, you can return it and trade it in toward the purchase of a new Blu-ray player.

According to reports, the retailer isn't publicizing the offer, though the news spread like wildfire across the internet this week, so shoppers will have to ask for it at the store. And this isn't a one-for-one trade -- customers will have to pay the difference between their HD DVD box and a new Blu-ray device, which could end up being a few hundred dollars. Also, the trade-in deal doesn't extend to HD DVD discs, just the hardware.

Of course, if you just want to get your HD DVD player out of your life and don't want the Blu-ray upgrade, you can alternately exchange your device for a Circuit City gift card

That's very cool of them, above-and-beyond.

Not trying to start a flame war, but I wonder if anyone will do the same for blu-ray players, particularily ones with profile 1.0, 1.1, with the 2.0 players to be released soon.
I would think this would be a fair offer, and it's nice to see Circuit City doing this for HD DVD players. On the other hand, Sony is involved (duh) with the blu-ray camp so I don't think any type of refund or trade-in or anything to compensate loyal customers will be done. Ever.

I would trade up to a 2.0 Blu-ray player if Sonystyle gave me the chance......might even move on up to the 550.......

Hi,

Thats good news for people who which to switch players. But I am
happy with my HD DVD Player and the cheap titles are great and so is the
Upconverting.

It makes me wonder since HD DVD is Dead why would Circuit City trade
players. I mean what is in it for them.

Remember they are a Business and everygoal of eery Business is to make
money. I suppose they could think you will be purchasing great amounts of
their High Price Blue Ray Movies, but with Blockbuster and Netflix why would
ya.

Makes me wonder why they want them back, no Company is in the Business
of losing Money..........

Exactly. So they probably give you less money for the trade-in than they turn around and sell it for.

I see this as a customer service win for Circuit City and their customers. Gives the HD DVD owners an option. Keep the player and enjoy the deals on HD DVD software. Or, if they feel like they have been left out to dry by Toshiba......they can trade the HD DVD player in on the winning format player, or a gift card.....

It’s basically a BD player coupon that cuts into there BD player mark up but nothing more, and then they turn around and sell the HDDVD player as an open box item. It gets inventory of the shelf which is probably not selling very well. Anyone notice how the PS3 is excluded.

Heck they might even get you to do an impulse buy on some software titles while there doing the transaction. As far as the gift card guess what?....At some point you wind up spending the money at the store and they get the player to sell at a discount. Now I’m not saying this does not benefit some, but if they really wanted to help why not just refunded the money back to the consumer……….. ;)
