I have a television with a native resolution of 1080i, if i understand things right all signals are up converted to 1080i. So if my televison is already upconverting to 1080i what is the benefit of and up converting dvd player if my television is already up converting a 480p signal to 1081i
:thankyou3

Not all up-conversion is as good as others. Generally a good UC player like an Oppo or the Toshiba up-converting HD-DVD players have better circuitry than the TV itself.
It's usually because the upconversion done closer to the source and in the digital domain. What kevinw says is correct in that most people do see an improvement with an upconverting player, however, if you already have a good progressive scan player and you purchase a really inexpensive upconverting one, there may not be a difference.
