I have Dish Network and don't feel like spending $150+ on a new receiver and $17+ per month for HD programming.
I will be buying a 42 inch flat screen TV most likely plasma from Panasonic. Since my signal will not be in HD, does it even matter I get 1080 rather than 720?
thanks!

Without an HD receiver, all programming will be 480i.
If you don't want to spend $150 for an upgrade right now, perhaps your new TV will have an internal ATSC receiver. All you may need to do is connect an antenna to receive your local digital channels. That's better than no HD at all.
Also, have a look at the following regarding SD PQ.

Like someone else told you in another forum (or a twin dish customer getting a panny plasma):
why buy a Ferrari and park it in the garage??
call Dish about upgrading - may not be $$$ as you think.

Don't forget...like Ratman was saying, if you don't want to spend money every month for an HD package then you can always get an antenna and get free over the air HD channels. It's better than nothing. I've been doing it for years.

Threaten to switch to another provider.

If you don't want to pay for a new receiver I'd try the logic above because its true you could go to another carrier and get the equipment for free.
In the end its well worth extra money each month for HD. Once you go HD you really can't go back to SD and be happy.
Bottom line is your buying a very nice TV and really not utilizing it. You won't buy a Viking stove if you only cook a meal once a week, you'd buy a $700 stove like most people.
