Has anyone used a DVR with HDTV? How well does it work? Also, does anyone know if you have to be a subscriber to say ReplayTV or Tivo to use the digital recorder or will the hardware work without a subscription?

I subscribe to DISH network and the HD PVR's are not out yet. Dish PVR's work with just the normal subscription, nothing extra, unless they change when the HD PVR's hit the market.

I don't know about Direct PVR's or the HD VHS units.

Good Luck,
Lee

There are a couple of HDDVRs that the Cable companies are testing internally, but have not been launched as yet. You should be able to rent or buy them from the cable companies, same as other STBs, only more money. They will be using the IPG that the cable company uses.

These will be "integrated" units. They will contain the cable tuners (actually several tuners) to allow recording of one channel while watching another, or "pausing live TV", etc.

Stand-alone HDDVRs are also coming to market soon, but they will perform differently. These will require firewire connections.

There is currently no DVR on the market that can record HD. Current Replaytv units require a subscription for them to work at all, not sure about Tivo but I imagine they would work similarly.
