I was watching a movie tonight and towards the end of the movie it went into protector mode. I turned the receiver off for a few minutes and turned it back on and played the same part of the movie again where it shut off and it shut off again. Does anyone know maybe what could cause it. I have checked all cables and see nothing wrong and I don't smell anything in the receiver( just checking incase it was a short). The volume was only at 9 o'clock so it wasn't very loud. It has done it before about two months ago. I played another movie tonight right afterwards but at a little louder level to see if it would happen again and nothing it never went into protect mode again. Should I go ahead and take it in or not worry about it? It has a 5 year warranty and I have only had it going on three years in June.

I had a Sony receiver that started switching into protect mode occasionally. After a few weeks it wouldn't come out of protect mode at all. It was old enough that I junked it (after the Sony shop said that it was a flat $90 just to look at it).
Since you have a couple of years left on your extended warranty, I would wait until it becomes more frequent so the repair shop can isolate the problem. Otherwise, you'll get it back unmodified.
Good Luck.

check the ohm rating on your speakers and make sure it matches the ohm rating on your receiver. my dad had bose 401 (4 ohm) running off a receiver rated 8-16 ohms and he was constantly getting an "overload" message on his receiver. so i snagged his 401s and he bought some 8 ohm paradigms. problem solved.
It couldn't hurt to call the service facility and give them the symptoms and model number of the receiver, they may already know about the problem and have a fix.
Maybe do a web search for 'Sony (model) protect error' or something to that effect. I tried it without the model and got some hits for different models. I used Google for the search.
edit: Saw that you did give us your model number. Didn't really come up with anything specific in the search. Did find this forum specifically on your reciever. When you open the link go to the fourth section 'Non-Flagships' and you'll find the link to your receiver there. STR-DA777ES (http://pub106.ezboard.com/baussiedvdandhtforum) . There are 20 pages of threads, you can search through those :)
57U/Kevin: The link to the correct spot is 92 characters. Is there a limit? Couldn't paste the link and make it work :(

I had my 444ES go into protector mode about a week after I had hooked up the 5.1 input. I took it to a Sony service center and they said it was some bad resistors. It was still under warranty so it cost me nothing.

Thanks for everyones reply's. I will playit tonight for some time and see if it does it again and then take it in. I am sure glad they have a 5 year warranty. I still have two years left so I should be taken care of. :)
