View Full Version : Reciever running when turned off

I have a dish network DVR (about 6 months old) and recently noticed that it is running when it's turned off in standby mode. It's making a humming noise and is warm. It has been turned off for several hours, but still running and warm. When I unplug it and plug it back in it sometimes makes a quieter hum, but after a while the hum is louder. Other times, when I turn it back on the hum is as loud as it was when I turned it off. I wouldn't say it's really loud, but it can be heard several feet away (probably more than several feet, but I have other background noise).

Should it be running like this when it is in standby mode?

Thanks.

Yes... the hard disk drive is still running for unattended recording (and perhaps a cooling fan?).

Do Dish Networks DVR's constantly record? Is the hard drive always on? My parents have Direct TV and they can turn theirs on and rewind up to 1.5 hours (only one channel-the one that was last turned on). I tried this with mine and it doesn't seem to work, I have to have the DVR power on for it to work.

Whenever a DVR is on and tuned to a channel, it records the channel you're on for a certain time period. Once you switch channels, the process starts over. I didn't think it recorded when off though.

I don't think dish DVR's do, but Direct TV does.

So why is it always running (fans or HD) if it isn't recording when it's turned off?

Some DVRs have a fan, some have a HDD that keeps spinning (there's conflicting information as to whether it's better to always have a HDD spinning or shut it down), or both. Depends on firmware, equipment, etc.

Well I had Dish send me a replacement 522 DVR, and it's just as loud and hot (in stand by mode) as the old one.

Is there any chance that these Dish receivers may be fire hazards?

Does anyone know if the Dish 722 DVR runs quieter/cooler than the 522?

Bump?

I've never read anywhere that the 522 has caused fires.

If you like... order a 722 and hope for the best.

Oh, that's just a new post to "bump" the thread up, so people see it at the top of the list...

Thanks, I guess I'll stop worrying about it. I'll get the 722 when I upgrade to a LCD HDTV.

After six years, I do know what a "bump" is. ;)

Yes, stop worrying and don't expect much (if any) difference when you get the 722.
