:o.... concerning issues associated with continuing carriage of local TV signals, including local HDTV........DirecTV also said in its FCC presentation that  HDTV's bandwidth consumption may result in the reduction or elimination of satellite-delivered local TV service if mandatory carriage requires full HD broadcast signal coverage.

Well now, I know for sure DISH heard that.....! :D

Um, are we for or against this? I personally don't give a hoot about local channels (since I can get them on cable and OTA where I live) and would gladly have them dropped from DirecTV to add more HD channels. Now I live in a flat metro area - but I grew up in a hilly rural area, and when I lived there I couldn't give a rat's a** for the yokel channels.

Um, are we for or against this?..........................

It is interesting that your User Id/Handle is FullBandWith....and this discussion involes the FullBandwith it take to transmit HD via DirecTV, Hmmmmmm......You must work for DirecTv.....No just kidding :D

Not for or against...rather for some of us this is a concern....Me for example...I live in what some would call a Digital /Analog Challenged - Green Acres, Hootersvile, or May Berry RFD....And I like where I live. There is one (1) DTV Channel slated to have been turned on in May of 2002 which has not happen, and it's not even ABC, or CBS, or NBC.. oh well you get the picture. We have to have cable or Satellite if we want get any type of local channel except maybe two Channels and that with a 25-30 ft ant analog only. In earthquake country beleive me you want some kind of local chs.....I tried cable as was so dissatisfiied with it (it never stayed up and the pq was terrible). I swithed/invested in DirecTV and HD at that... it stays up not even rainy weather bothers it and there are no little white dots, dahes, and or lines all over the picture.

In looking at the filing, and if I read it correctly DirecTV is saying their ability to transmitt any more HD than they're already transmitting is threatened...... local or otherwise.

And I find that hard to believe since DISH says they're ready or able to bring on at least 60 HD Channels including locals.:o

And I for one would like to get good usage out of my HD investment as I'm a early adopter of sorts...

$3K+ 55" upgradeable HD Big Screen in mid 2000
$200+ Oval Sat Dish upgrade in late 2000
$500+ HD STB upgrade in Early 2001.

HDNET is great.....the more HD you see the more you want to see
so .....

I subscribe to HBO and Showtime more $ 2 C HD.

I don't consider my self to be a tight-wad. I have paid, am paying, and willing to pay....but not much more considring HD Discovery will be a subscription event as will probably ESPN If DireTv will carry therm, and what about HDNEt Movies, HDNet Sports....?

Not to complain just stating the facts and future concerns about the possible excessive rising cost of HD on DirecTV not sure what DISH and Cable users are facing.

Am I the only one with these concerns?
I don't think so....

And others out there with or without these concerns by all means your input is welcomed as it helps to be in the know.

Your earthquake comment puts it in some perspective for me, I guess I hadn't considered the value of local broadcast during times of emergency. I'd forgotton on 9/11 that was the only communications that worked - phones and internet were overwhelmed. For some people sat would be the only source of information. So in that sense giving sat bandwidth to locals makes sense from a national security point of view.

The flipside is that one of the reasons the FCC is hammering the transition to digital is so the existing analog bandwidth can be freed up to give to emergency services radios. So promoting DTV and HDTV is good for national security as it means these freqs will be available sooner.

Couldn't happen to a better company. Their DirecPC screwed me out of several hundred dollars because of their low bandwidth. I hope they rot in He**

Another General Motors company.
