Sinclair will demonstrate a sister 8-VSB modulation with Linx at the NAB. They will use two 6 MHz stations. One will demonstrate mobile HDTV. This will be a non-compatible modulation developed in China. Linx will include both 8-VSB and this new modulation on a single chip so that they can address both the Chinese and US markets if China picks this new modulation OQAM (Offset QAM). Test in China suggest that this modulation may be 20% better
than COFDM when compared to COFDM using QPSK in a mobile mode.

China has many concurrent studies on modulation including three that are racing for a potential decision hopefully this summer as to what modulation will be used in China. A number of these studies are working to improve COFDM also including one hybrid with CDMA.

Sinclair seems to be the only US broadcaster that is really involved with the science of broadcasting. The birth of HDTV in the US had everything to do with trying to keep up with Japan. We should be more worried about China. They have both the market, the manufacturing skills, the labor supply and the universities stocked with US trained professors.

Why would any one want to watch TV while driving?

One will demonstrate mobile HDTV

Someone need to check ROBMX's green card!

Kevin... Mobile HDTV will allow you to keep your eyes busy while talking on Japanese cell phones in your car! If you're lucky enough and have a 'hands free' cell in your car, you can also eat Chinese food.

With all of these distractions, it will give the American educated Chinese the opportunity to drop an American designed atomic bomb on us and eliminate the Yankee horror of 8VSB.:D

How about SUV owners? About one in three come with an entertainment center in the back seat that includes a video screen already. And boats and buses and trains and just out in the backyard or by the pool without any wires on a moderate sized TV set?

What about PDA's, laptops and any number of DVD type portable players.

Good point... but why is broadcast digital TV so very important while the SUV or RV is in motion??? Even your car radio loses reception in various situations and after a certain distance!

Mobile TV is a 'nice to have' not a necessity and should not have any bearing on broadcast standards. IMO... the home comes first.

BTW, if one really needs to watch "Friends" while on a vacation in their RV, then why not stay home if TV is so important?

Humbug!

If you have to chose between two modulations and one had a higher bitrate and works both mobile portable and fixed, why would you pick the one that has a lower bit rate and doesn't work mobile or portable and requires more effort to work fixed?

BTW both Sirius and XMRadio are digital radio offering that will work across the country hopefully in all situations and at any distance. They both rely on COFDM terestrial broadcast to reach most of their customers most of the time even though they advertise as satellite systems.

As to your last comment I do not know how to respond except that your opinion is different than mine.

With a good modulation we do not have to pick what comes first and last. They all work.

And even if the home comes first you still want to have the best modulation that works in the most homes the easiest at the lowest cost and works with current analog TV sets.

Yeah XM radio is the stupidest most RETARD idea Ive ever heard. Having to pay to listen to the radio. RIGHTTTTTTTTTTTT will never ever ever ever ever do that. Then to top it off regular radio mostly sucks anyway. Listen to CD's is pretty much the only way to go for me. PLus, hardly isnt any station out there that plays the music that I like............

Personally, Mike, I find XM radio a great value. It delivers specatacular sound and a wonderful range of choices.
For anyone who does any amount of long distance driving it is a godsend.

XM comes in handy when you commute long distances to work. I have to drive over an hour to work and I like the fact that I don't have to switch stations all the time. There are 100 channels that you can pick from so everybody's listening tastes are covered.
