I went into RS to purchase an antenna so that I may be able to watch the local networks in HD, but the manager said that as long as you have Direct TV with the HD dish then you should be able to receive the local networks in HD. I don't have Direct TV installed yet, but I will by the end of the week. I figured in was misinformed. What do you think?

No, No, No. DirecTV does not broadcast locals in HD. You will need an OTA capable receiver and an antenna for your locals in HD(if available).

Why are salespeople so afraid of saying "I don't know?" Standing around looking stupid is a lot better than opening your mouth and removing all doubt.

I am not defending sales-people at all! But, to there credit, DirectTV themselves was confused about this subject. At first, I was told by DirectTV that, if I picked a market that was broadcasting HDTV OTA, that I would recieve those channels in HDTC from DirectTV.

With that, I set about requesting waivers from all my local affiliates on the grounds they were not broadcasting inHDTV yet, and my new HDTV was quite expensive ;)

It was right about then that, on a hunch, I called DirectTV again about the same subject, and this time was told absolutetly not.....local channels come from DirctTV's non-HDTV capable bird.

Then the waivers started coming back to me.....approved

Oh well. To make matters even more ironic......my local CBS starts HDTV OTS this week, with the three other networks to be live by November.

Gotta love bleeding edge technology.

if you buy a Directv HDTV receiver that is a all in one tuner, terrestrial hdtv receiver for local channels, is that all you need to get Directv in HDTV and your local channels in HDTV?

I'm not familiar with the Directv HDTV receiver only because my Directv HDTV receiver is built right inside of my RCA HDTV, but it sounds like your on the right track. In addition to your receiver you will also need the Directv Dual LNB Satelite dish. One LNB(Sat 101) is for your standard channels and the second LNB(Sat LNB) is to receive the HDNet channel and HBO-HD(if you're a subscriber). As for local channels you will need an antenna if you would like to receive them in HD. Check out Titan.com and find out what stations in your area are broadcasting in HD. You will also find this website helpful in determining what type of antenna you will need.
