I just ordered my first HD hardware. I purchased a 50" Panasonic Plasma and Bu-Ray Home theater.

I am looking for a good, enteraining, FAMILY movie to showcase our new system. The hardware hasn't even been delivered, but I was going to purchase a few movies to watch with the family.

I like action and comedy. The wife likes suspense/horror. Daughter is 11 years old, (and I haven't seen her, or my wife, in 15 months) so your guess is as good as mine.

I hear the Pixar movies are good.

Any recommendations are appreciated.

Thanks,
Vincent

Action/comedy and suspense/horror - sounds like you would do good picking up the Disney Pirate movies.

I, Robot with Will Smith is very entertaining and the visuals will blow you away. Ratatouille for the daughter is a good one also.

I just ordered Disney/Pixar Cars and BBC Planet Earth Blu-Ray.

I was searching for the Pirates of the Caribbean box set on Blu-Ray, but is hasn't been released as a box set, so I will wait, but those are great movies, and the HD versions should make a big impression.

Thanks,
Vincent

You should enjoy both of those titles....

If the BD version is as good as television is, then the 5th element is amazing.

Kevin W, I may have to rent a copy of that in the near future...

Boating Fool, Highdefdigest.com is a great place to see which movies are rated best for VIDEO and Sound. Another good place is your local bookstore where a copy of Widescreen Review magazine can purchased/read. I have found both of these sources to be "right on" with their reviews.

Thank you again for the info. Some quick internet searches yielded some sites, but I am still sorting through the trash and the ones with real info. Thanks for the site recommendation, that is exactly what I was looking for. I will also look for the magazine you noted.

Anyone else seen Wall-E yet? I think it's definitely a reference-level movie. The PQ is pretty amazing. DTS track too.

Got Wall-E in mail from Blockbuster the other day. Have a request to wait until next week to watch it with Brother-In-Law. I am looking forward to the DTS HD MA Lossless 6.1 sound. Highdefdigest gave it 5 stars for Movie, Picture and sound quality. But, guess I will have wait to see it. :( Or, watch in now and then too.

Watched Hellboy 2 with a DTS HD MA 7.1 track over the weekend. Pciture was very good on my new DMP-BD-55K.

The sound was also very good. But, I may still need to do some tweaking on the speaker set up. Dialogue was very understandable. But, I expected a little more use of the surrounds. I am off Tuesday. So, I kept the disc to keep tweaking.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y169/qstorm77/thinking.gif The audio is listed as 5.1 DTS-HD MA on the back of my Wall-E case. I bought Hellboy 2 a few days after it was released. Too bad I don't have a 7.1 system to take full advantage of the DTS track on that title. :( It looks great though.

Pretty Sure the version of Wall-E that I got from Blockbuster is the 6.1 version. I get to watch it Wednesday or Thursday of this week.

http://fc65.deviantart.com/fs35/f/2008/289/4/3/huh__by_S1h4d0w.gif It'll be quite interesting if you in fact have a BD copy of Wall-E that's 6.1 while mine is 5.1. To my knowledge there's only one audio track made for each BD release and it's used on every copy of that title that's produced.

In any case, I picked up Prince Caspian yesterday and watched it last night with the fiancé. Another great BD flick IMO. PQ and audio are both awesome. This one has a 7.1 DTS-HD MA track. I need to look at who the effects house is for these Narnia movies in the credits because they do impressive work. Not sure if it's all ILM or if another company was involved.

I think that there is a Dolby 5.1 EX track (and probably DTS-ES), which is 6.1.

Would that EX track be on the SD version? There's nothing about that or DTS-ES on the blu-ray case.

Yes...

Just found this:
The Audio: Rating the Sound

A DTS-HD Lossless Master Audio track is offered for 'Wall•E,' in 6.1 Surround (48kHz/24-bit). (Note: The track is incorrectly labeled as 5.1 Surround on the packaging.) There are no other mixes offered (not even standard Dolby Digital or any other foreign language dubs or subtitles. The audio is superb, delivering a fully immersive experience that is sure to dazzle.

We have Wall-E, and it looks great. But there's a lot of subtle detail. I was more impressed with Wall-E's PQ at the theatre.

If I was selling Blu-Ray players, I would run Kung Fu Panda on the display. Breathtaking colors. It looks fabulous. Try it.

Really?! You're the first person I've come across who thought theater PQ looked better than BD. I haven't seen Kung Fu Panda but have been considering picking it up.
