I was watching the Tonight Show last night and for some reason it wasn't in HD. Anybody else notice this? Does this happen once in a while?
Due to the Iraq situation, NBC has not shown much HD. I guess they have difficulity switching back and forth or something...

It appears to be due to a few issues- one being that NBC cannot cut into their HD feeds with breaking news (a weak excuse IMHO) but they also use Ku band satellites- along with all of the media covering the war, so bandwidth might be at a premium right now. Th eother networks use C band satellites and are unaffected.
This is from a post on AVS forum. However thet SD signal looks better than standard 480SD to me- almost like cropped 1080. I know that it is at minimum upconverted to 1080 by the local station.

I agree, NBC's explanation is very weak. You'd think with their stable of popular shows - Friends, Frasier, Will & Grace, West Wing et al, NBC would be the frontrunner in HD broadcasting. I think NBC missed a giant window of opportunity by not cashing in on broadcasting all of their weekly top 20 shows in HD.
We are pleased that CBS and now ABC are leading the way with such great programs as Raymond, CSI, My Wife & Kids, 8 Simple Rules, King of Queens being broadcasted in HD.

It's funny to me how much I appreciate HD programming- It is far more like being there thatn SDTV. The depth of field alone blows me away. (Mitsu ws-55859) Sports are incredible in HD, and I really don't feel the need to ever go to a live event again.
I've read that HD programming is related to the contract of that show- which is why we don't see Friends and the like in HD. Maybe when they come up for renewal, they'll convert to HD, but since Friends is nearing the end of the run, I suspect that they''ll call it quits first.
I still want to see Enterprise in HD. the genre just lends itself so well to the medium. I know that I enjoy JAG more in HD.

I have noticed the same problem with NBC here in New York this past week. Wednesday night I turned on the Tonight Show and saw that it was not in HD but in the 4:3 square box with the black bars. I didn't think anything of it until I looked ar ER last night and it also was not in HD. Same for the Tonight Shpw again. I called my cable company Time Warner and they said there was no problem on their end. I have to agree since I am receiving the HD shows on CBS, NBC and PBS.

Just got a call back from the HD guru at WNBC here in NY who confirmed that NBC is not broadcasting an HD signal at this time. As posted here earlier he cited logistics with the War In Iraq coverage. He did say they are trying to get the problem worked out and have a solution a.s.a.p.
Leno is HD tonight. Great to have Leno back in HD as a "check".
